    This blessedness arises not from his own duties, or his well-meant endeavors to keep the Law; but from the pardoning love of God, the purifying blood of Jesus, and the sanctifying operations of the Holy Spirit. His blessedness consists in being cleansed from his loathsome defilement, the non-imputation of his enormous debt, the removal of his intolerable burden, and the renewal of a right spirit within him. The last of which particulars is not the cause or condition of the former, but an evidence of their being enjoyed. The observation that Paul makes on this evangelical and comfortable text is directly to our purpose. He informs us that the design of David in these words is to describe the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works (Rom 4:6-8). Righteousness imputed, “righteousness without works”— an odd kind of language in the account of many, uncouth and mysterious to all who are alive to the Law and seeking justification by it. But it is quite intelligible and highly comforting to such as are dead to the Law; to those who believe in Jesus as the justifier of “the ungodly”; and who venerate His charming name, “The Lord our righteousness” (Jer 33:16). To such persons, the phrases are full of marrow and fatness.

    Such divine declarations feast their souls, for they are the words of grace and the language of love. By them, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, their anxious inquiries about acceptance with the eternal Sovereign are satisfied. Being conscious that they have no righteousness of their own, and equally certain that without obedience to the divine Law they cannot be justified, they must have sunk in despair if such a provision had not been made by sovereign grace—if such a righteousness had not been performed by their wonderful Substitute. They need a righteousness without works, one that has no dependence upon, and is entirely detached from, their own duties of every kind; one that is complete in itself and intended for their use. They need an imputed righteousness, being performed for them by Jesus as their representative, and placed to their account by a gracious God. This brings it near to their souls, makes it warrantable for them to call it their own and to glory in it... An excerpt from The Death Of Legal Hope by Abraham Booth (1734-1806)

    Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

    3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

    3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

    3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

    3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

    3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

    3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

    3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

    3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

    3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

    3:29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

    3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

    3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

    For it was not until we heard the Gospel of our salvation, that we were even aware of such great blessedness.

    " in whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
    12 that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
    13 in whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
    14 which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."     ( Ephesians 1:11-14 )

    Well it's good that all men need to do is choose to believe which they can as the gospel is preached to every creature. Good they don't need to be saved by the keeping of the law.

    I don't see they have to do with an absolute before or after believe idea. Some are and some aren't.

    Blessed are the poor in spirit meaning blessed are those who see (or choose to see) their need for spiritual things. That can be when one choose to not walk in pride and decides to receive the grace of God.

    Being poor in spirit can be also after one has received the grace of God. One has to choose to walk in humility all the days of their lives. Blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy....some of these beatitudes aren't even about salvation for that would mean you show mercy and God will save you.

    It is a general reap what you sow principle but not about eternal salvation. It can hinder one walking in the grace of God as the one with the great debt who had it forgiven refused to show mercy to his fellow servant and God changed not to forgive him but generally this beatitude is referring to general reaping what you sow by being good and gracious it will come back to you, or as the world says, "What goes around comes around!"

    Glad you asked Kyredneck. It means if you choose to embrace a certain way of thinking like seeing your need for God it means such an individual is blessed in so desiring to do this. Glad I could help! :Thumbsup

    Blessed of God the Father.

    " Blessed [is the man whom] thou choosest, and causest to approach [unto thee, that] he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple." ( Psalms 65:4 )

    Blessed is the one whom God chooses, and causes them to choose Him. ;)


    The simplicity that is in Christ...He does it all, and He gets all the credit.
    A greater blessing one cannot find, than to be found in the grace and mercy of God.:)

    Glen,

    This blessedness is not a result of man's efforts, but of God's ( Romans 4:4, Romans 11:5-6 ).
    It is a direct result of God's deciding to have mercy and compassion on a person ( Exodus 33:19, Romans 9:14-18 ), not on them deciding to do something to get out of going to Hell or to gain His favor and ensure an eternal, heart-to-heart relationship with Him.


    1) " Blessed [are] the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." ( Matthew 5:5 )

    Who are the meek, and why are they meek?

    " But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
    23 meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."     ( Galatians 5:22-23 )

    They are those whom God has made meek in His sight, by the power of the indwelling Spirit...whose hearts have been changed, and made in the image of His dear Son ( Romans 8:29 ), and whose minds are no longer carnal ( Romans 8:5-8 ), but are now spiritual. They have the mind of Christ ( 1 Corinthians 2:16, Philippians 2:5 ), spiritually, and seek to obey Him out of a new nature ( 2 Corinthians 5:17 )...one that desires Him and His ways.



    2) " Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God. " ( Matthew 5:8 )

    How does one purify their own heart?
    How does one make pure, that which God's word tells us:

    " The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], and desperately wicked: who can know it?" ( Jeremiah 17:9 )

    How does one undo that which was allowed by God to happen to men ( Romans 1:18-32 ) and make the words of Jesus Christ void here:

    " And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
    21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
    22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
    23 all these evil things come from within, and defile the man." ( Mark 7:20-23 )

    We, as mere men, cannot...for to do so would require something that we do not have; God's power of regeneration (     John 1:13, John 3:3-6, 1 John 2:29, 1 John 3:9, 1 John 5:1, 1 John 5:18, 1 John 5:4, Titus 3:5-6 ).
    A man's wicked heart is the source of all his woes.
    A man's wicked heart is the source of all his hatred towards God.

    Blessed is the man whose heart has been changed, and made soft and willing towards the living God.:Thumbsup




    Those that are such, can say with the angel that spoke to Daniel:

    " And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
    12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words." ( Daniel 10:11-12 )

    How does one set their heart to understand and to chasten one's self before God?
    Because they are greatly beloved ( Ephesians 2:4-10 ) and are His workmanship.

    No other way makes salvation 100% "of God".
    No other way truly shows that a man or woman has been blessed, than for God to pronounce them blessed and justified ( Romans 8:33 ), even as Mary was by the angel that visited her ( Luke 1:28 ) , and declared her as such.

    Those of us that have believed on Christ, do so knowing that if it were not God's doing, then it is not truly His blessedness.
    Salvation is not of works, lest any man should boast in their own efforts. :Cool

    Let us always be minded:


    " Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
    11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake." ( Matthew 5:10-11 )

    " Blessed [is] the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is." ( Jeremiah 17:7 )

    " Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." ( Psalms 1:1 )

    " O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him." ( Psalms 34:8 )


    Blessed are all those who trust in Him for everything.:)

    Whose Righteousness?... Whose Faith?... Whose Mercy?... Whose Grace?... Whose Love?... Mine?????... It's what I been given through the birth , life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and nothing less... I have it all and am so blessed because of Jesus Christ and nothing else... So is everyone that belongs to him, even though they don't understand the depth of it... Brother Glen:)

    Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

    2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

    2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

    2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved

    2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

    2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

    2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

    So you would agree with the rendering of The New Living Translation:

    3“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
    4God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
    5God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
    6God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
    7God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
    8God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
    9God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
    10God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
    11“God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about youc and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.
    12Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way. Mt 5
