Well, from my neck of the woods.. a "spinster" is a derogatory term... and Scarlett has done nothing to deem "spinster"... IMO.. that was very rude...

    Almost as rude as Boxer...

Then maybe people in your neck of the woods should get a dictionary. There's nothing derogatory about it. It just means an older, single woman.

I'm sorry you feel that it's rude, but I don't see any reason to re-write the English language to make you happy.

    JDF,

This is a matter of not being rude and uncouth, and instead being a gentleman. If a lady has asked you not to call her something, then it is proper to respect that request, provided it doesn't cause you to disobey God. No one is asking you to rewrite the English language. The request is to be respectful of those you are talking to.

It reminds me that perhaps we need some teaching on being a man around here. A lot of men seem to have missed that growing up.

Nicely done. Way to go personal. If you have some evidence of that, I will be glad to entertain it. I have always been willing to listen to people who can give evidence. I have a standing policy that I immediately apologize when it is shown that I was incorrect or wrong. I have done it many times. I will certainly do it now, if you will be so kind as to support your charges.

But the fact remains that even if I do it or someone else does it, it is still wrong. It doesn't justify you doing it. As a gentleman, it is appropriate to call a woman what she requests to be called.

I didn't impugn your manhood. If you read what I said, I was talking about acting like a gentleman. Gentlemen treat ladies with respect, and that includes calling them what they desire to be called. A lot of boys are growing up with no teaching on how to be a man. They mistreat women. I think that is wrong.

it is not acceptable if the person you are directing it at is offended by it regardless of how you personally see it. Spinster has always had a negative connotation. Your lack of knowledge on this may be a result of your age. Stop using that word toward her.

Thank you. Seems you like to dish it out, but are unable to take it, yourself.

    Ah, how quickly they forget...

Actually, it's because of my age that I'm able to remember when the word was used routinely and was not considered offensive.

In fact, I was just listening to "You Bet Your Life" the other day and they must have called one of the contestants a spinster a dozen times. Funny, nobody objected to it.

Is that not the word the dictionary defines as a woman who remains unmarried after the normal marrying age?

I'm curious, are you equally offended by "batchelor"?

    Considering:
    • this thread is over three pages
      and
    • the depths of insult it has gotten to
    I'm closeing it right now.
