That the nature of the English language: always changing. There are a lot of phrases that used to be benign, but have new meaning today. Even the word "screw" has a sexual context. "Make love" used to refer to to simply romancing, while it now refers to the sexual act. Even the word "sodomite" today referrs to one who engages in a specific act, while in the 1600's, it referred to either a resident of Sodom, or a temple prostitute.
I don't think that is true at all. If that were true, then we should make no more of a judgement upon them any more than we can make a judgement upon someone who sufferrs from, say, bipolar disorder or cerebral palsey.
