i have some family members that are charismatic they attend a church that speaks in tongues and they exhibit some of the name it claim it mentality. i would say that they are more of the soft charismatics and not as outlandish as rolling on the floor and barking yet anyway. my question is how to expose this type of error and help teach them it is wrong, any suggestions? please no suggestions from liberal religionist please.
1.
Present it to the Lord and ask for help, wisdom, and guidance in this issue.
2.
If it is possible to be engaged in a simple and regular Bible study with these members of your family, do so.
But again, let God do the work in their hearts and don't come on as oppositional.
When they get disillusioned, they will need someone they trust to turn to.
I pray that someone will be you!
thanks helen
you know i really did forget to bring it up in prayer. sometimes i see how little regard i give to the Lord. i really try to work on relying on Him more. i look for the day that i can put on my cares and concerns upon Him. but i do thank Him that they are not of the liberal sort (just kidding)
When I experienced this myself I just began educating myself on what the Bible has to say about their beliefs.
I read the entire books of Acts and 1 Corinthians several times.
I keep studying and praying that they will see the truth, but there isn't much I can do about it.
We can't make them see if they choose not to.
When you do have an opportunity, be gentle and loving in your approach.
Helen had a great idea about a Bible study.
My husband and I began to study together and we both agreed that we were going to read it for what it said and "Forget" what we had been taught.
We began studying other areas, not hitting on our disagreements at first.
We were seeking the truth in the Word.
As those issues did come up we searched for the truth in the Word and we found it.
God is going to have to be the one to show it to them and they are going to have to be willing to listen.
We still have family that believes this way and they feel content to do so.
I pray that your family will be open to the Spirit of truth.
God bless you as you share His truths with them!
thank you for sharing that with me. sometimes i feel all alone in the family, i do not really have any family members that are in any Godly reliable churches. i cannot help if that sounds as if only i know that they are in the wrong church or doctrine. it is awkward for me to even be a good witness to my immediate family, much less my other family members.
First of all realize that only God can change a persons belief or their mind. Pray.
I Cor 13:8-13 says:
I was brought up Pentecostal, and this was the scripture that turned me around. That which is made perfect is the Word of God...Tongues were a method of communication as were some of the other things mentioned, that when the Bible, that that was made perfect had come...the need for alternate forms of communication of God's word were no longer necessary. I believe that the present day utterances of tongues are not in actuality from God, but are a demonstrative form of pier pressure. Like the Emporers New Cloths.
See also I Cor. 14:7-25 for a further explanation of what the gift of tongues was and what it's original purpose was.
Understand that a person responds better to love, and sometimes even then the process to change ones beliefs can take years. Good luck to you, and please bathe it in prayer and love before speaking to these people...ask for the words...ask for a softened heart...ask for the Lord's leading.
