I love chickens, and can't wait to get some of my own. They are full of personality and can teach us humans a thing or two. -

My wife is wanting to get some, she goes crazy everytime we go into Tractor Supply and they have the little chicks. I'm not that crazy about the idea, but I'm sure I'll give in, I always do. I guess I need to go ahead and start looking for some plans to build a good chicken tractor.

There's always a few in a crowd Salty, always a few. LOL
I remember my grandmother having a crazy mean rooster. He always tried to chase me and all I had to do was be within a mile. URG!
Another rooster used to annoy the tar out of me too! Wouldn't shut up. Every morning for hours and hours. One morning it was quiet. We had chicken for dinner that night. The children have eyed me suspiciously ever since.
We had a slaughtered chicken make it all the way to a neighbors house once. Seriously. Chopped her head off and the neighbors had to let us know where to find our dinner!
Still, I do love to watch chickens, regardless of dinner plans. -
When I was a kid - back around 57, 58 time frame, we also had a chicken like that. Bit me once too often. That night I mom gave me the leg! -
I remember when quite young, being full of horrified fascination when my great aunt lost hold of a chicken after detaching its head with a sharp edge and the body raced about flapping its wings and spouting blood.......

Well, I guess I will be the contrarian. I was raised on a chicken farm in Missouri, and I DON'T like chickens.
Really, really messy creatures. Plus roosters chase you, and snakes like to visit the roost to grab eggs.
However, I do eat chicken and eggs. -
Karen's reply about growing up on a chicken farm reminds me of an old John Anderson tune
Chicken Truck
It was mornin' when I left Alabama
I must a been around in mid July
Well I got behind a chicken truck from Georgia
And the feathers were a fallin' like snow out of the sky
I couldn't get up speed enough to pass him
And a funny smell was a gettin' close to me
Somethin' keeps on messin' up my windshield
And the further I go the harder it gets to see
Chicken Truck, Chicken Truck, behind it I'm stuck
Chicken Truck, Chicken Truck, ain't it just my luck
Chicken Truck on Highway 65
Well the hens are a squawkin', the roosters are a crowin'
He's a slowin' me down when I need to keep goin'
Chicken Truck on Highway 65
He slowed down and I finally got around him
On a big long hill just south of Tennessee
He had a box of Colonel Sanders on his dashboard
He was eatin' fried chicken and throwin' the bones on me
Chicken Truck, Chicken Truck, behind it I'm stuck
Chicken Truck, Chicken Truck, ain't it just my luck
Chicken Truck on Highway 65
Well the hens are a squawkin', the roosters are a crowin'
He's a slowin' me down when I need to keep goin'

In fact, he'll go and lie outside the pen and the moment he sees a hawk, will start barking and running around the pen to try to scare him off. He chases a fox off every now and then. The chickens have grown to like him. They'll come over to see him when he comes out. -

Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken and watch them feathers fly
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Bring out the butter and the flour we're ready to fry.
My dog Pete is the smallest dog of all the dogs in my yard
He's a mean son of a gun
Drinks Beam and water from a broken mason jar
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken and watch them feathers fly
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Bring out the butter and the flour we're ready to fry.
I heard this awful noise coming outta the woods
I heard chicken screams and
Know it ain't gonna be good
Well I think we lost the chicken
Think we lost the chicken
Think we lost the chicken because I just heard a cry
Think we lost the chicken
Think we lost the chicken
but you can get another one for a dollar 79
In a couple of years his spurs have grown
He wasn't safe to keep around the house
When he almost took an eyeball from Lonny's son
Now I was sitting at home making fig preserves
And I'd heard that youngen get kicked in the face
And I knew that that was the day that chicken was going to get what he deserved
So I chased the chicken
I chased the chicken
I chased the chicken and Pete hit 'em from the side
I chased the chicken
I chased the chicken
me and Pete suppered on a home made chicken pot pie
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken.
Sic 'em on a chicken and watch them feathers fly
Sic 'em on a chicken
Sic 'em on a chicken
I can smell the kitchen and it's almost supper time.
