There are two Windows updates which "break" the ability of Internet Explorer users to pick their own background color on Internet pages.
They are titled something similar to "Security Update for Internet Explorer 6" and are numbered 890XXX, and 832XXX or 833XXX.
When I downloaded these two updates from "Windows Updates" I noticed after rebooting that the background on Internet pages had changed from light gray to white and I could no longer get it back to gray.
As soon as I went and uninstalled these two updates, I again had full control of the background color of Internet pages.
I have seen this posted on newsgroup discussions, the exact same problem with the exact same "solution" (uninstall).
Microsoft has made no attempt to fix this bug.
I normally have the background on my Internet pages set to a light gray and all the "Accesibility" options checked under Tools/Internet Options/Accesibility (this overrides whatever colors the page would default to.)
The light gray is one hundred times easier on my eyes than the glaring white.

Now, why would you suggest this is Micromanagement Soft's problem? They wouldn't do that?? More then once or twice anyway :)
I am finding more and more software companies automatically doing things that I don't want them to do and it gets quite irritating at times :) -
Easy answer - abandon IE for Firefox .
