Sure thing, I'll post the recipe for Spicy Pumpkin Cake with Chocolate Chunks in the Recipes thread.
The usual funeral thing around here (mostly Catholic or no religion) is to have a wake at the funeral home for 2 days and nights (2-5, 7-9 PM) and then the burial the 3rd morning. What many of us at our church has done is to just have the funeral home prepare the body and such - then they bring the body to the church (his body came today at 3). The family has time in the afternoon to visit with each other and then they either have something catered at church or they go out to eat (I think this family is bringing in Italian food from a local restaurant). Then the visitation with the family is from 7-8, and the service is from 8 to about 8:45. After that, it's more time for visitation with the family. Tomorrow morning will be a few moments alone for the immediate family and then they head to the cemetary for the burial.
When my mom passed away, I found this method to be extremely wonderful and much less draining on the family than the long drawn-out thing.
In the service, we will be singing 3 worship songs as a congregation - acutally the deceased's choices - and then there are 2 "Special music" selections being sung - one by a friend who is a fellow cancer sufferer and the other from a dear young woman who lost her mom to lung cancer. This young woman will be singing Kathy Troccoli's "Goodbye for Now" and that is when we will have the pictures shown on the screen - it was beautiful! There are collages of pictures near the casket but these pictures on the screen are more "alive" and fit with the song so perfectly. It's going to be a beautiful funeral that will be a testimony to God's grace and mercy, His never failing love and a tribute to this brother's life.

A burial at 8:45 at night? It is pitch black here.
A normal service here is about 30 minutes, with about 15-20 minutes at graveside.
The wake for two days and nights, regular visiting hours, and the burial happens on the 3rd day, usually.

THis just ain't fair....me & my wittle wife are deep down south southerners....yeah I know the south fell...but it will RISE again!!!! Just like her biscuts!!
When we got married there wasn't no "grooms cake" or any other kind either! Course we never got a "Honeymoon" either cause we bothe had to be at work the next morning! The boss wouldn't even give us ONE day off.

What I found was that the family are usually numbed at the funeral, so I typed a copy of my sermon and gave to the family for reading at a later date. I made my first pastoral call after two weeks.
By that time, a lot of people stop calling, feeling they don't kow what to say, and the family are left all alone, abandoned.

Carl's Grooms cake was chocolate. It had two tiers, and a topper with the groom in an Air Force uniform. I also found some small jets that were put on and around it.

I understood then why the visitors sign a guest book because I couldn't remember who was there!
After the burial is when I felt the most alone when my husband died. Everyone else went back to their lives and I was all alone after several days of hectic activity. I wasn't saved then so I didn't have a pastor or church family (and I wasn't sure about God).
My world had stopped and I couldn't understand how everyone else could carry on as if nothing had happened. I guess I expected their world to stop too.
I don't know how I would have survived if it were not for having to keep enough of my sanity to take care of four young children (I was 27).

SUE: I know that memories can make you weep, but never apologize for Love, You express your Love with tears, and memories. Funerals are one of the few times that Love is given, and not expected in return.
Our dinner went fine last night. Everybody enjoyed themselves; and the food must have been okay because very little was left.
I brought in Cranberry Sausage Quiche, Oven Breakfast Hash, and Mini-Sticky Pecan Buns. Enjoy.
Today I have to make my Halloween treats. The kids get Light Boo Cups [chocolate pudding with crushed chocolate cookies, and whipped topping to look like a ghost with chocolate chips for the ghosts eyes.] The adults get Apple Caramel Sundae Tarts. I also make sure I have plenty of Hot Chocolate for the kids, and Coffee for the adults[it gets cold when you're walking around at night]. Last year we had about 280 kids[people bring them out from town, then pick them up. I'll probably make about 300 of the Light Boo Cups, and 100 of the Apple Caramel Sundae Tarts, with 2 or 3 large percolators of coffee(1-reg, 1-decaf), and 5-6 large pots of fresh made hot chocolate.
Hopefully I can show Jesus' Love by providing safe treats, and warm beverages to show His warm affection for all.
Time to get to work, after I do my chores, that is. Don't know if I'll be able to check in again today or not, trick-or-treaters come from 5pm-8pm.

Good morning all,
I couldn't get to sleep last night until 3:00 this morning. I got up at 7:00 but have been busy with breakfast, dishes, and school.
I now need to run some errands.

Sue - I had no idea that you were such a young widow! How heartbreaking - I can't even begin to imagine.
The funeral was absolutely amazing. We got there a little late -visiting started at 7 and we got there at 20 after. There was a line out the church, across the parking lot, taking a 90 degree turn and going atleast 30 yards down from there! Oh my goodness! We were worried that we wouldn't fit them all but we did. The service was beautiful - a few eulogies, some beautiful songs, great worship and, of course, my slide show to the Kathy Troccoli song "Goodbye for Now". What was most amazing was that George's father and best friend both came to the Lord - and he had said the night before he died that if they came to the Lord, his death would be worth it. Oh, praise God!!
The family has so much support right now but I know in time it will gradually decrease. I plan to bring a dinner over in a few weeks - when the meals slow down a bit and when the kids are back at college. We'll also have Mary over for dinner around then too. I know that she's surrounded by love right now and will be OK although I can't ever imagine losing the love of your life.
So, anyway, today is catch-up day. Monday is usually pretty quiet with doing school and such but we got almost none done yesterday and no housework got done either. So, I'm buckling down today. So, off to do laundry and clean my kitchen!

It is 28º this morning. Brrrrrrr! I believe the high is going to be 46º this afternoon. Temperatures will remain about the same through the rest of the week and the rain will arrive Saturday.
I'm home this morning and will be gone most of the afternoon. Then back home to fix supper and go to church.

* WHEW * I'm whipped. We had 331 kids come to the door last night. Good thing I made extra treats. The kids and adults went thru all the treats, hot cocoa, and hot coffee. Some of the adults even asked for the recipes. LOL.

I added Chocolate Cluster Peanut Butter Cake, Peppermint Chocolate Pudding Pie, and Triple Chocolate Bliss Cake to the Recipe thread.

Good morning all! FoG, I'm going to have to check those recipes out - although after last night, I'm swearing off of all sugar for a few days. I have insulin resistance (make too much insulin) and all that sugar went straight to my belly and now my pants hurt. Bleck!! Gotta cut that down this week (a few days with no sugar or carbs does it).
I've got to call the doctor today for my son. He got his DPaT and Polio boosters on Monday, and the arm with the DPaT is now red, hot and swollen - and itchy. I'm not sure what we can do other than Benadryl but I'd like to find out. I'm going to have a friend look at it who's a nurse when I drop off Joanna at preschool. Poor guy is miserable!
I'm SO happy about today - there is a mom at preschool who doesn't buckle her kids in to safety seats - her 2 year old sits in a booster seat backwards looking out the window as they drive away and she doesn't even HAVE a seat for her 4 year old, even though it's the law that they need to be in a booster until they're 7. It drove me crazy (I'm a car seat/safety freak) and I was talking to a friend about it when a Dad and his kids walked into school - and I remembered he was a county cop!! Yeah!! I spoke to him and he said he'd talk to her today - he's on duty and will be in uniform to boot. He said that if she doesn't listen, he can give the cops a heads-up who patrol the area to keep an eye out so that she'd atleast get a ticket and maybe will buckle the kids up because of that. I can't stand when parents don't buckle their kids in - she even puts on her OWN seatbelt!! So she'll survive the crash but the kids will become missiles and be thrown around - or worse yet, thrown from the car. It would totally not be their fault but they would reap the consequences.
Today we have to keep up with homeschool and then I hope to go horseback riding later. I have a lesson tomorrow and I need to get him worked a bit today since tomorrow is supposed to be cold again and that makes him crazy. Atleast if I can work out some energy today, we just may have a chance to have a good lesson.

Oh how Jenna hated her carseat. She used to absolutely drive us nuts, screaming bloody murder, if we had to drive for more 15 minutes. But I kept her in it! So I feel for this mother but still think she needs to get a backbone!
She's lucky that your state does an age restriction and not a weight restriction like ours. In our state the kids have to be 70 or 75 pounds before they can ride without a booster. Chris is nearly 12 and barely meets the weight restriction. When it went into effect this summer I thought I was going to have to put him back into one. Little sister Jenna weighs just as much and is nearly as tall. They look more like twins than being 3 whole years apart.
Sue, you made go look at the weather when you said it was cold, but our cold air isn't coming in until tonight. Good thing cause I sent my poor kids to school in short sleeves because it was so warm this morning!
Between Halloween and this weather system moving through, the kids are very migrainy this am. Please pray that they don't develop full fledged migraines. Chris missed all of last week and Monday with one(and a stupid stomach virus) and he needs to go school for a few days.
Should be a slower day for me, though I still have a stack of sewing to get done. It's exchange day though, so I have to make out bills before I sew. Hopefully that won't too depressing. I hate paying bills!
