What are some bible verses you have commonly heard misquoted?

I am looking for a mixture of quotes unbelievers use but mainly bible verses that are taught wrong in Baptist Churches.

Im doing a lesson on our need for discernment and to “prove all things”.

Money is the root of all evil
For the LOVE of money is....

Judge not lest ye be judge
Not so much that it is misquoted- but taken out of context.

Matthew 18:19-20 19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. 20 For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”

This passage is about church discipline.

"To be absent from the body IS to be present with the Lord." [a declarative and independent sentence.]

2 Corinthians 5:8-9 = "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, AND to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. [dependent phrase and the main idea of what Paul was saying in those first few verses]

A pet peeve of mine. Sorry. I say quote it correctly or not at all.

My brother attended BJU and was required to memorized verses - not just verbally,
but they had to write the verse with ALL required publication!

Though I think AWANA is a great program - they allow 2 helps per section while reciting a verse.

My pastor - Merlin G. Schultz- did not accept that - the verse had to be word perfect, without any help. I am so glad that he had high standards.

John 8:32, ". . . And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. . . ."
Failing to understand, Jesus was referring to Himself, John 8:36, ". . . If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. . . ." (Also John 14:6)

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

speaking of the fact that all of the elect will be saved, God is long-suffering with the wicked, waiting until each elect sheep is saved, He is not willing that any perish, not one.

Phil 1:6 Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you is able to complete it until the return of Jesus Christ. (sorry, I'm quoting from memory which isn't what it used to be)

The verse is often used as a promise of personal holiness. The "you" is plural and the context is about proclamation of the gospel in the midst of persecution. It should be understood as a work "among you". The work "among you" is the proclamation of the gospel even in times of hardship and persecution, which is the context.

    Peace to you.

IO Chron 7:14 has nothing to do w us. Its a promise to OT Israel

Rev 3:20 Is not an invitation to salvation but Jesus being shut out of His own Church

John 3:16. Actually teaches limited atonement but thats already been beat to death

Jer 29. Again not a promise to christians but to OT Israel

False. The text says ". . . if any man . . ." . . . εαν τις . . . Speaking to the lost at that local church. And BTW the seven letters are addressed to the seven individuals, the messenger of each of those churches. Not to those congergations, though Jesus did also address some of them. Stating a promise to the saved (. . overcomes . . .) at each.

The letter is written to one of the 7 churches.

It is a church issue NOT an individual issue

That letter was was written to that individual messenger of that church. ". . . And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: . . ."

Alright, guys, the thread is commonly misquoted Bible verses, not misinterpreted Bible verses.

How about verses that are attributed to the Bible, but aren't actually IN the Bible?

"God helps those who help themselves."

"When God closes a door, he opens a window."

"God hates the sin, but loves the sinner."

"The lion shall lie down with the lamb."

The message was to be delivered by John to the pastors (angels, messengers) of those churches for the benefit of those churches. The Pastors were then to take it to the church members. Not sure where you miss that.
