We didn't write it. We don't need to defend it. The man had an opinion and the right to state it. He took the opportunity to do so. If you think it needs to be defended then write him a letter.
The problem is you think these things must be an all or nothing deal. They aren't. Even authors I like I do not expect to always agree with. The flip-side is also true. Even folks like you that I have several disagreements with I know that there are some things we will agree on. The same is true with media sources.
