Consumer expert warns against smartphone, Bible-app use in worship

“We go looking for a scripture verse and next thing we know we are lost in the daily current of life,” said Roberts, a marketing professor at Baylor University and member of Calvary Baptist Church in Waco, Texas.
But Roberts’ isn’t a stodgy Baptist offended by technophile Millennials in the sanctuary. Rather, he is one of the nation’s leading researchers in the field of compulsive consumer behavior.

Not too far from saying not to read your Bible in church for fear of becoming addicted to reading.

The guy has a point. But I fear the reaction if pastors started imploring their congregants to shun using the Bible app on their phone during church. I'd probably quit going to that church. Luddites.

Well, the old fogie using the print Bible can probably find some distractions of his own -- memorize the books of the Bible, look at the study notes, the concordance, or flip through a harmony of the gospels or maps in the back. But he'll have a hard time sliding page 936 in his Ryrie Study Bible to get to the Baptist Board, Twitter, texts, e-mails, Facebook, or other social media.

Roberts:
“We are such a distracted people,” he said. “My 2 cents is that church should be the one place we are not distracted.”
(Driving a car might be another!)

Here lately I have spent a lot if time on my smart phone in church. Preacher has for some odd reason become obsessed with bashing Creflo Dollar. I don't go to Creflos church. I don't watch him. Why do I need to come to my SBC church and continually hear about him? So, yeah, as soon as preacher says "Dollar" I read my smart phone the rest of the service. As soon as he gets off him he will move on to someone else so it will be same junk round 40.
