We've got a 90 year old deacon who has moved with his wife to an assisted living facility in a nearby town and have also moved their membership to the church that is next door to where they live. I would like to honor him/her for their time of service with us by having him named as an honorary "Deacon Emeritus". Has anyone else honored a deacon at their church in this way?

Honor him by throwing a big bash at the nursing home and minister to the people there! That would be an honor. -
We've done that before - for about the same reasons. We wanted to thank God for this man's service, and in so doing, encourage the man himself. This served not only as a "thank you," but also a testimony from a life of service to all who were gathered.

OK, this reminds me of a quote...THAT IS NOT GERMANE TO THIS INDIVIDUAL...
:D
Anyways, I concur w/ the Squire. -
I like the party idea for him. It would show that he is not forgotten.
Can you name someone as a deacon emeritus who is not a member of your church? -
Throw a party for him and at the same time give him a nice plaque.

I agree with Tom. This man should be recognized for the years of service he gave your church. However if he has moved his membership I am not sure it is appropriate to give him any type of title, honorary or not.

We have an elder emeritus, but he's still a member of our church.

I agree with Squire on this one. Do both - honorary title and party!
