I would go with a Dell or Sony, you can find some great deals here: http://www.edealinfo.com/

I've not had either -- but of the people I know that have one or the other, the Dells hold up better.
-
HP is said to be great as well.

Throwing other computers into the mix -- I've got an IBM laptop and it is on all the time. I carry it everywhere. It's been great.

I have had personal experience with Toshiba. It was a great laptop but I got rid of it to get a lighter one due to carrying it with us everywhere we go. We now have an Averatec (much lighter) and it seems to work even better.

Toshiba ranked the best for not needing repairs as often (specifically, the Tectra line). HP's and Gateways ranked worst (among the big names).
Problem is Tectras aren't known as the best desktop replacement laptop. They are usually more of a portable business model. But they are very dependable.
Here's the desktop replacement laptop I would get (if I needed one). Fully loaded and includes a docking station and other spiffy features. This is the ultimate desktop replacement:

You might not need that much power in yours though. -
Sony would be my first choice for a microsoft type system, it comes down to what you are willing to spend, and how long the warranty is that comes with the goods?

Yeah, if you post your budget and requirements, I can try to find you a nice laptop to fit your needs.

I have a fujitsu that I use daily, carry it everywhere for work, use it in offices, at home, in data centers, etc.. booted to Win2000, SuSE Linux, and Solaris 10
Panasonic makes some tough laptops if you are using it in a more hostile environment.
Sony and Toshiba seem good, some guys at work have those. Toshiba supports Linux very well.
