Poll: Democrats Not Sympathetic to Religion
    Tuesday, August 30, 2005

WASHINGTON — Democrats' efforts to improve their image with religious voters after the 2004 presidential election appear to be getting off to a bumpy start.

Fewer people see Democrats as friendly to religion now than felt that way a year ago, according to a poll released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

That number has dropped from 40 percent in August 2004 who thought the Democrats were friendly to religion to 29 percent now.

"The change is seen across all groups," said Scott Keeter, director of survey research for the Pew Research Center, which conducted the poll for the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

After Democrats fared poorly with religious voters in the 2004 election, the Democratic National Committee initiated numerous efforts to strengthen its standing with religious voters.

The DNC hired someone to coordinate religious outreach, encouraged state parties to work more closely with the religious community, and had Chairman Howard Dean meet with clergy and others in the religious community during his travels around the country.

"We're at the beginning," said Democratic spokeswoman Karen Finney, who said religious voters share many of the values of the Democratic Party. "But we know we need to do a better job of talking about our values in a way that people see we share their values."

More than half of those polled, 55 percent, said the Republican Party is friendly to religion.

A majority of political independents, 54 percent, said religious conservatives have too much influence over the GOP. Fewer than half of independents said those who are not religious have too much impact on the Democratic Party.

The poll of 2,000 adults was conducted July 7-17 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

in our little town there seem to be more left-wing democrats than anything else our elected city officials voted for a sister city in cuba
most of the professors are democrats and our political scene is very liberal needless to say there is nothing spoken of Christianity now we have an organization called Bloomington Peace Action Coalition that is bombarding our local community access television and radio stations with Anti-American and Anti-Israel propaganda day and night I have had enough and am in the process of doing something about it by showing christian and pro-Israel video's and doing whatever I can to change things here they are showing satellite feeds of an organization called Free Speech TV that is trying to destroy anything positive good christian about America one of the programs that aired is called Dyke Tv
and another is Deep dish Tv all liberal anti-family Anti-government programs geared to perverting America there seems to be no opposition to it in our community it is as if all the christians are dead or gone I hope this letter has not left you depressed the war is on and it is as much here as it is anywhere and God is still on His throne and God and I are a majority as far as I am concerned of course God doesn't need me but I need and desire His help
    Amen

I think Howard Dean's mouth has done a lot to fuel perceptions that Dems are unfriendly to Christianity.

You gotta give FoxNews credit for their expertise on skewing a story. Here (linkie) is the research report that the Faux article is based on.

It's an interesting poll on American's perceptions (which the OP takes as fact) of the two parties.

Are not all poll results based on the "perceptions" of those polled? It's a given.

The title of this thread states flat out, "Democrats Unfriendly to Religion" as though that were a fact. If the poll had asked the pollstees what their party affliation was and whether they themselves were friendly towards religion or not, then if the Democrats self-identified as being unfriendly towards religion, the title would not be so blatently misleading.

    As is,

    Greetings, Daisy:

You have hit the nail on the head here. The title of this thread is a bit misleading, and the link to the article does not support the title.

Howard Dean has talked about reaching out to Christians. Although I am undoubtedly sure that we would disagree on a great many things, Howard Dean does profess to be a Christian. As he has claimed to be a Christian, I do not question his faith, much the same way I do not question the President's. I do not agree with much of what Howard Deans says, but I do enjoy him tremendously!!! [IMG]

I trust that you and "Mr. Daisy" are doing well, and I trust that God is showering both of you with His Blessings,

    BiR

Your main problem, besides ideoligical blindness, is you don't like Fox News as a source.

    Too bad. [IMG]

The democrat party is unfriendly to the Christian Religion. I think they go for New Age, Scientism, and etc.

I think they'd stand a better chance at winning elections if they'd read Michael Ledeens book about Machiavelli.

You only gotta look righteous in front of the cameras to get the voters to eagerly eat from your blood soaked hands. Amen.
