I'm switching to one of the two. Which do you prefer and why? I have lots of questions :)
DirecTV or Dish Network?

At lest you don't have to worry about shoveling snow of of it.
But I did have to trim the tree every so often.
I do have cable now, because Time Warner has its own local news and local sports channel and a few other perks. -
Tom,
Check your PMs.

I used to have Dish, and my parents have Direct. From a user standpoint, and funtionality, I give the edge to Dish. One drawback, no on demand movies.

I thought Dish had on Demand now.

OK, that might explain it. I didn't have a DVR, but I did have my box hooked up to a phone line to purchase movies, they just weren't on demand. I think they ran every 2 hours.

If you are a big sports fan, Direct TV is by far better. It has exclusive the sports packages that you can subscribe to such as NFL Sunday ticket and the equivalent for the other sports.

Which is better...to mount the dish on top of your roof or on a pole?
I don't have any SW sky visibility issues, far as I can tell -
I have only had dish.. dad has direct ...

Tom, I have Dish Network (for about 4 years) and I am pleased overall. However, I am seriously considering a switch to DirectTV for one reason: MLB Network. Dish does not carry it (yet). I may give them a few more months, but they may lose me to DirectTV because of this.
One advantage of Dish is the standard size of their DVR hard drive - 100 hours of programming. I believe DirectTV is only 40 hours. -
I have Dish. I have considered DirectTV but I like the customer service I have gotten from Dish. I do not know if Direct can give the same service. Sky Angel is the perk I like best on Dish. I don't watch it as much as I could but it is there when I do. :type:

I switched from Comcast to Direct TV in December. Glad I made the change. Have my dish mounted on a pole. The installer told me that Direct has less problems with installing on a pole versus placing on the roof or eaves.
My HD DVR has 100 hours of recording time. -
Our dish was mounted on our house in Illinois and is on our house here in Tennessee. That has more to do with the treelines in both places than it does anything else.

We have Direct TV and we really enjoy it. As previously stated the on-demand movies and the sports packages are a real plus.
