is that allowed at all?
is it a case of each church decided that issue, or is there an official position for SBC, general baptists, Free Will etc?

It is really not up to a baptist as we have a command.
1Cor 14:39
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Now understand not all who claim to be of the Lord are and will disobey these commands for their own desires.

Thank you IntheLight for pointing out the insanity of JesusFan's posts.
To add, one last time, BAPTISTS don't command anything...but historically tongue speaking has been part of segments of Baptist theology and spiritual practice. So has snake handling and ordaining women...fundamentalist Baptist dispensational cessationism only represents a fraction of the history of Baptist theology.

According the SBC IMB as of 2006 a missionary candidate is not allowed to have a private prayer language.
http://imb.org/main/news/details.asp?StoryID=3667
4. In terms of general practice, the majority of Southern Baptists do not accept what is referred to as "private prayer language." Therefore, if "private prayer language" is an ongoing part of his or her conviction and practice, the candidate has eliminated himself or herself from being a representative of the IMB of the SBC.

This has no impact on the local church other that who can benefit from the money they send to the SBC cooperative program.

No one speaks in tongues today....nobody.
If God wanted to have someone speak in tongues they would, but no one does.
The silly rhyming noises, and people barking like dogs, is just excess of the flesh being manifest.
but if you want to play make believe like catholics do with appearances of mary on their toast..... i will post in tongues for you...

Hey, I understood what you said.
Let me interpret:
I don't care how emotionally or spiritually high you get during church, but I want you speaking English when you come down.

I speak in a tongue. It's called English. The "tongues" in Acts weren't gibberish, they were actual languages or dialects thereof.

How the modern day gibberish got started:
Two young men were fighting outside a traveling evangelist's tent.
The first had a strand of cloth around the others neck and it was clear the man was being choked.
He sputtered, "untie my bowtie."
The aggressor yelled, "Who stole my Hyundai?"
The evangelist decided to use those men in an illustration in the next city he traveled to, and it took off from there.

I no longer hold to tongues as from god today, nor ANY sign gifts operating for today...
Question was CAN a baptist church though decide to allow tongues and other things and remain a baptist church, as that would fall under soul liberty?

JF,
My points on this is;
1] if no one speaks in tongues, there is nothing to allow
2] If tongues were given by God, then God would sovereignly allow or give the tongue, and any interpretation it it.
3] If I were completely wrong on this as well as the historic church, God would over-rule whatever i thought anyhow
4] If God given tongues were ongoing, they would have been providing revelation to the church all along.
5] Instead of getting busy serving God day by day, many look to substitute this nonsense, thinking that somehow they are "moving" in the Spirit.....when In reality they are standing quite still in the flesh....doing nothing but wasting time, like catholics repeating the rosary beads, or jewish people dovening....[rocking back and forth] when they recite prayers, new age people chanting, etc.

Oops, I was translating the wrong language.
I thought he was speaking in a different one from what you heard.
Wait a minute!
Didn't those folks on Pentecost hear what was said in their own language?
So what I heard could be just as valid as what you heard Iconoclast say.
Couldn't it?
Or, would we hear the same thing in English, regardless of the language being spoken?

Think the interprtation of that tongue would actually be:
When will it all end, when can we foget discussing all this stoff over and over again, like a cycle in washer?
