active before 1970 who quoted other versions favorably? This question is intended for the KJVO folks.
It will be hard for you people to name any preacher from 1880 --1970 as an example -- who quoted only from the KJV. Many used the KJV primarily but thought that some renderings in the latter were inferior to that of other versions such as the RV, American Standard Version, Weymouth, MLB etc.
I know that some of you (collective "you") think that people are lost if they use any version of the Bible but the KJV. A number of you are not as severe. You think that other versions are impoverished -- that they may contain some basic doctrines, but really are watered-down compared to the super-clear and only inspired version -- the KJV.
Therefore, is it still possible that you might even respect some preachers who "compromised" by using other versions primarily -- or quoted them with favor occasionally though using the KJV chiefly?

I'm no longer KJVO, but I thought that some might not even know that preachers such as Dr. John R. Rice, Jack Hyles, Carl McIntyre, Dr. Bob Jones, and a host more, would favorably quote from the RSV or NASB.

Up into the 60's, most of used the KJV in the pulpit. All my preaching, from 1945 to the present has been from the KJV. I have used many modern versions, including the "Devil's" version, the RSV, in personal study and without reference quoted them in sermons. In my time, we had a direct battle with modernism and the RSV was anathema because it was translated by liberals.
Dr. Carl McIntyre's name was mentioned as using the RSV...My friend, I saw Dr. McIntyre throw the RSV to the ground whilst preaching.
We were well aware of the problems with the KJV, but we tended to work around them, or explain them, but we respected the KJV primarily because it was the common Bible in the pew..............it is also the best "sermon" Bible even to to-day.
It wasn't until the mid 60's that those other versions became more common, at least in the circles of my travels, Evangelical Baptist circles in Canada.

Jim, perhaps I was wrong on McIntyre. I thought he used the NASB upon occasion, not the RSV. Perhaps (probably) I am thinking of someone else.
But the fact remains that prior to the 1980's it was no big deal for a Baptist preacher to quote from another version, or even (HORRORS!) the Hebrew or Greek, if he felt that expressed the interpretation of the verse more clearly than the KJV. -
I admire Jesus! Does he fit into the list?

But watch out for the responses! -
I am not sure entirely what you are saying here. Do you mean a "famous" or "published" preacher? -
I should know better than to respond to lunatics. -

I keep forgetting...what is the Aramaic word for "thus" or "sayeth"?

I didn't say anything about you being a lunatic, but that I should know beter than to respond to lunatics.
Maybe you should re-iterate your comments because you have made some pretty blatant attacks on the word of God and Jesus. -
Contrary to the belief of many of my KJVO relatives, my grandfather did use other version in his personal study.
In fact he did change for preaching at one point in his ministry. He only reverted back do to the practical reasons of the people in the pew having more difficulty following along with him using the KJV. -
of course spurgeon was a prime example. -
If you think Christ used the KJV during his earthly ministry, it is you that is the lunatic. -
I don't believe any copy of the scriptures is the verbal, inerrant, inspired word of God. Some are very good copies, but they are not the original documents.
Preservation, as a doctrine, does not exist in any scriptures.
Cheers,
Jim
PS. I still use my 1945 KJV exclusively in the pulpit. -
