Since I am not a Biblical Scholar, I can not read Hebrew & Greek to uncover deeper meanings, therefore I would like to ask those who have the knowledge to tell me the real meaning of the name of JESUS. I was told it means "Yahweh saves" so is that correct?
I can't find any reference that says either Iesous in the Greek or Ye'howshuwa` in the Hebrew can be interpreted as "Jehovah/Yahweh saves" or "saved." All references I found state pretty much -- other than identifying the people in the Bible bearing those names, including the Savior Son of God -- that the names mean "Jehovah/Yahweh is salvation."
That doesn't indicate an active work of saving all. It indicates He is salvation for those who believe.
well I was told by a Roman Catholic Priest with his doctorate from Notre Dame (I stay connected to my favorite people in any & all Religious societies) that it means " Yahweh saves"
His premise, if I understand him correctly, would be similar to yours. This man contends the "Jesus & Me" Religious crowd is wrong in that they add human choice & interaction with God in-order to obtain salvation. He told me what they believe is NOT New Testament.....its actually heresy. The bottom line is that if you're busy saving your soul then you're preventing God from saving your soul.
We have discussed & debated this a myriad of times on this board but I was fascinated that this stance should come from a Doctor of the RCC Church who I'm assuming should be believing in a works based religion! I think he has gone way beyond his churches doctrines & deep into scriptures to pull that out & I applaud him for that. Even a RC can have revelation through scripture. :godisgood:
yes I know, I was a Catholic for 32 years..... thats why I'm not vilifying them like some in here.
I guess that this guys being a Priest knows that he cant save people & he probably knows that people cant save themselves....it has to come from divine intervention.
Therefore,
it's only God saves people. Thus his commentary about Jesus meaning Yahweh saves. Somehow I find that comforting.
LOL, yea well in truth, they are all full of Baloney...... generally the Catholic knows they are full of it......they are just not sittin around claiming that they are the "Born Again Saved".....they leave that to your type. And that I find to be the truly laughable of the two.
Don't think we can just take the meaning of His name, and then proceed to make a whole system of wrong theology from it, and ignore all the rest of the NT!
Please tell me brother....just who does that? I certainly did not indicate that by my post about my Catholic priest friend. Therefore Y your taking things out of context. Go back and read the entire thread please.
However isn't it interesting though that "Jesus" means Yahwah saves. And that its put in the present context....think about it.
