Does Title = Position, or ...

There is a discussion in the women's forum about what is done at church.

Many of the women do not have "titles". Just because the "title" does not exist, the job is still being done "by a woman". What is the difference between being given a title and doing the job?

Baptists play word games.

Many churches I know have only MEN be "deacons", but we all know their WIVES make the real decisions and make sure the work is done.

BTW, men are to be leaders/decision makers. But every person - men, women, children - are to be actually DOING the work of the ministry. Eph 4:11

It's that way in my family. I'm the man, the head of the house. My wife? She's the neck, and turns the head wherever she wants it to go . .

A rather large Baptist Church decided to have only MEN
as Pastors. Women could NOT be Pastors but could be Ministers.

So there were men who were:

Senior PASTOR
PASTOR OF Missions
PASTOR OF Music

And there were women who were staff memebers who were:

MINISTER of Children
MINISTER of Hospital Visitation
MINISTER of Youth
MINISTER of Senior Adults

Anyway, one day one of those ladies used to working
with the "Minister of Senior Adults" called
for the Pastor of Missions. She got all flustered
on the phone and asked for the "Minister of Passions"

I wholehearted agree with Dr. Bob!

Deacons can perform the work of an elder (administrator/shepherd/preacher).

Women perform the work of a deacon (servant).

Pastors should be encouraging growth in their congregants and attempt to work themselves out of a job so greater work can be done.

There are distinct ministries of elders (who are only men and only masculine noun/pronoun used) listed in the NT. Teaching and administrating, etc.

But their main function is to equip ALL believers to do the work of serving.

All of the other "positions" or "titles" are non-biblical and fit under the simple "work of service".

how bout authority? does the Bible give much to deacons? in Cobb's manual he says they have only what the church gives them that from scripture they have no more than any one else in church.

Deacons were simply servants of the church, assisting the elders like the "shamash" in the synagogue assisted there.

Cleaning, helping with books, lights, building, serving widows and needy, etc.

NEVER a "board"
NEVER "decision making" power
NEVER "authority"
NEVER "leaders"

Just good men and women, chosen by the body, to serve "officially". EVERY member of the body is to serve "unofficially".

Say Doc. Bob do you think the appointments of deacons are for life? excepting where one fails to live up to the standard.

I got from Dr. Bob's post that he feels the role of women deacons are permissable, something I feel the Bible is pretty clear on.

I can't be sure but I don't think any Baptist preacher from Wyoming would believe that much less keep his job.
