The so-called Christian right would be unable to compose a note that he could read anyway. He went to Harvard and knows the east coast. The Christian right prefers defeat to victory.</font>
Sounds like a personal attack against myself and my intelligence. BTW, I prefer a pro-life conservative like Alito to an O'Connor Compromise like Miers. Let's at least act like we won the election last year and fight for this nominee. Furthermore, the man's religious leaning has no bearing on him being a SC justice. He is a pro-life conservative and we should be behind him because of that. Bill Clinton is a Southern Baptist. Does that make him worthy to sit on the Court? Regardless of their bad theology, they are pro-life and conservative.
You are right on this case, the Christian right snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and stuck us with another Catholic on the court as if Catholic jurisprudence (substitute French and Latin American) were not the worst in the Christian world. Talk about Bush's syncretism, what about the syncretism of the Evangelicals who act as if there never was a Protestant Reformation?
This is but vain babbling and has nothing to do with the topic. Alito is ten times better than Miers when it comes to a SC pick. We are winning and the liberals are gonna lose if we will get behind this candidate.
The only possible conclusion is that the only doctrine that Evangelicals know is what they read in the Left Behind series.
Since I am a preterist, that comment would not apply to me. Haven't even wasted my time with Lehaye. What about you?
Evangelicals, wake up and study some doctrine and try to show yourselves as good workmen for a change.
I agree. I think everyone should study the Bible and become a preterist like me. :D
Never mind, they are asleep in the pews, safe in the knowledge that they will never have any tribulation in their lives--it is right out of the fairy tales such as The Emperor's New Clothes.
We are winning. Why don't you get on board and join the winning team and support the president and his nominee, and leave your hatred for others at the door. It is really unbecoming a Christian.

2. If you truly are a pro-life conservative, you should be happy because this guy is also very pro-life and conservative in his rulings.
3. Stop being bitter and get behind the president and help him fight for this pro-life conservative nominee.

Sorry, Joseph, but you were not even in my thoughts. -

I don't know why we are so excited about an eastern Catholic being added to the bench when we already have so many Catholics on the bench and Easterners already dominated the country.
I am waiting for a Christian evangelical to be elected who won't have Moslems in for Ramadan dinners in the White House in an attempt to buy peace. -
I am excited about it because he is a pro-life conservative. Personally, that is all that matters to me with the SC nomination. I don't care what religion he is.

Maybe, but it will be from political pressure from Protestants and not from Catholics, who have a peculiar legal doctrine of the relationship between the Pope and a nation and who have a less free system of jurisprudence. We now have at least 4 Catholics on the bench in a country that was founded as a haven from Catholicism and which in 1776 only had about 2% Catholic, if that much. We have abandoned our Protestant heritage and freedoms for a pot of soup from the Vatican--we even have to pay taxes to support a diplomatic mission to the Vatican on the basis that the Roman Catholic Church is a state and not a church.

I am afraid that many "Christians" today think that the Catholic Church is "just another denomination".

I supported the President on the last nominee. And I am doing nothing officially to oppose this nominee although it makes 4 Catholics and 1 Jew on the court. The right wing (while the Democrats held their coats) badgered Miers till she withdrew and now they are badgering the rest of us to support what they have done. I am afraid that I liked Miers better than this one that we have now. The price to be paid, if any, will be a year from now.

BiR,
Do you honestly think that the decision in Roe v. Wade will be overturned?
I'm afraid it's a better question than my conservative friends here believe. I certainly hope that it is overturned but it is a legitimate concern that even conservative jurists may be tempted to let this 30+ year old precedent stand simply due to that fact. If it turns out that Roberts will vote in that direction then that would give us four votes, with Scalia, Thomas, and Alito. The latter three seem to strongly believe that Roe is bad law and that abortion should go back to the states to decide, as they should.
I hope that my liberal friend is wrong.
Safety and Godspeed in your recent travels, BiR.
