I am sure this thread idea is nothing new... nevertheless, I am curious... what is your favorite type of Bible (e.g. cover quality/binding, color, size, etc.)?
God bless!

Wide margin. Large print. Calf skin. Burgundy or Black cover. Sown binding. Words of Christ in red or not. With center references or not. Not too big, but big enough the onlookers know it's the Bible. King James of course!

Hey, Precepts, sounds like we like the same *type* of Bible.
The only thing different. I like to carry a parallel Bible. Those are hard to find with wide margins.
Bro. Ed, is your "Today's Parallel" hard backed.
I wonder if it is possible to get it in leather. -
Large print, Roman font. Cross-references. Concordance. Chapter headings. Thumb index.
However, I don't have ALL this in any one copy.
I have one "table model" edition, and it's the KJV from Heirloom Publications, which is sometimes presented to the family of a deceased person at the funeral. It's 14"X 12", large, plain print w/cross-references between the two columns of text, has a thorough concordance & dictionary, & a brief bio of each Apostle, as well as a little history of each Book. Its cost is about $60, USA. I would highly recommend this edition to those who like to study the KJV at home. -
I like whatever is cheapest in large print. A Bible is a Bible no matter what the cover is.

Honestly, I'm beginning to find that my favorite Bible is my software version...
But the one I'm carrying is a wide-margin Cambridge Bonded Leather. I wore out my other one, which was calfskin leather and about an inch narrower. I preffered the cut and feel of my old one, but the new one is nice too, and was a gift. The Bible before that was a Thompson Chain calfskin that has belonged to my grandfather, but stayed in the box becouase he preferred his Scofield. I liked that one, too- nice and thick, with "firecracker" red page edges (instead of today's more common gold edges).
That begs a related question- how do you dispose of a worn Bible (if you do at all)? -
Leather binding, large print, good references, good concordance, NKJV or KJV preferrably.

I like the new well-made (not gift bible) Thin, but large print. It doesn't leave a lot of room for extras, but if I'm "just reading the Bible", not using the study aides, it is lighter weight, easier to carry and the large print helps. When they say the eyes start going at 40, they mean 40 on the dot. I'm 46 and my eyes are getting harder to focus at short-range every single day.
I cannot use the "real" large print Bibles, the thin-lines seem to have just the right font for me. They are NOT cheap; however, unless you can catch them on sale. -
Bibles should be red (read)

The only ones I've EVER seen tossed are cheap copies that have fallen apart or have been invaded by "bookworms", silverfish, etc. Many, MANY people have "family Bibles" that are generations old, and are used as journals to record family births, marriages, and deaths. I have such a Bible, and it's used ONLY as a journal. It's a leather-bound KJV, circa 1858, and it provides me with the names of some ancestors of whom I'd never heard of. I believe this is the "fate" of many an old Bible.
My pastor has several Bibles whose pages look like rainbows where he's used just about every available color of highlighter in them!(Different colors for different topics) About the only pages of text not marked are in lamentations & in the Song of Solomon, neither of which he says he's ever preached from. When he wears a Bible out from frequent use, it goes on his library shelf, He says he simply cannot throw away an "old friend" that's served him so well.
He "breaks in" a new Bible by using it for home study, and in preparing his sermons, but he places his notes & prompts in his "church" Bible, a leather-bound NKJV, using them for bookmarks as well as reminders.
The "type" Bible he prefers is a leather-bound copy made from sturdy materials so it lasts through mucho use, but becomes "broken in" for quick & easy access to any page. -
leather bound, no red letters ESV

I do all of my Bible study sitting at my computer using just two Bible study programs (I have other Bible study programs, but I almost never use them). My favorite kind of Bible for devotions and church going is a NAS Reference Bible with the following features:
The notes provided by the Lockman Foundation
A genuine leather (rather than bonded leather) black cover
High-quality sown bindings similar to those in Cambridge Bibles
Print that is big enough that I can easily read it and share it with most others
Black letter rather than red letter
Standard margins so that the Bible is not too big and heavy -
"About the only pages of text not marked are in lamentations & in the Song of Solomon, neither of which he says he's ever preached from."
Strange.
"I'm a wall and my tits are like towers"
I'd say there are 2 dozen sermons in that line from the song of songs alone.
What? -
Similar to Craigbythesea, my personal favorite is my NASB large print ultrathin, for the following reasons:
(1) Wonderful calfskin, smythe sewn binding.
(2) A perfect font size (at least for me), not too big or small
(3) Same features as their wide margin side column reference (except for the wider margins) in a handier size.
(4) A lifetime guarantee from the publisher.
Frankly, it's the way a Bible should be made, IMHO, and the primary reason I use the NASB instead of the ESV (also an excellent translation). -
I used to love my KJV Cambridge Wide Margin, Black Gen Lthr, but praise God, it was 'worn out' and relegated to the shelf...then NKJV Wide Margin, Black Bonded Lthr, but it wore out quick, since the leather was cheap!
Now I use two Bibles, both NKJV, one which is falling apart, and I love the "feel", layout, etc...(wish it was a wee bit larger print) is the "Believer's Study Bible" which is hardcover, and I bought through CBD back in July 97 for $15.00..now they are called "Baptist Study Bible" and I've bought about a ten from a local Book store (Christian) for only $10.00 to give away or resale at cost.
The other Bible I love is my Black Gen Lthr Scofield (NKJV) which I bought through Scripture Truth for $38.00. Excellent! BTW, their site is:www.ScriptureTruth.com
