The Federal law does take precedent over state laws.
It doesn't matter though. This ruling will be appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.. Then, regardless of how they rule, it will be appealed to the Supreme Court.
And is marriage an area that the Constitution reserves to the Federal government?
If not then it is a matter for the States.
This case was appealed to the Federal government, so it appears they have jurisdiction.
There are probably five votes on the US Supreme court to overturn this ruling. Even with Kagan coming on, there are probably five. The USSC frequently overturns this particular court's decisions as they are quite radical. Still, unfortunately, our society seems destined to allow same-sex marriage sooner or later and probably sooner.

Otherwise, we're all in the tank.
That's true, but there is no Federal constitutional right to gay marriage.
