Back in 1976, when I was going to the University of Oklahoma (OU), I was in the library and talked to a man from Bangladesh. He said 'hoarding' in his country was defined as: having enough food for tomorrow.
I must be a real hoarder -- I check my stock on the 5th of each Month (my SS checks comes in on the 3rd ;) ) to see which have expired and distributed to the poor. -
They should come here to shop, theres plenty of food in our stores, no shortages.

Things you need to check daily (like milk), no.
My church also buys expired food cheep from stores, to distribulate to the poor (long shelve life items that may still be good after the 'sell by' date.)
I live in one of the top 10% wealthy counties in the USofA. -

Bio fuels are adding to the problem. The rice it would take to fill up a large vehicle would supply one person a year.

His wife drives a 'Nissan' wagon;
my bride drives a GMC 'Jimmy',
and I drive a 'Coastal Kinardly' Pick-up, myself. ;)

"Mr. Rawles said it is hard to know how much of the shortages are due to lagging supply and how much is caused by consumers hedging against future price hikes or a total lack of product."
-
Even the food pantries are experiencing shortages.

I eat your garbage. :tonofbricks:
As you have done it unto the least of these my brethern, you have done it unto ME. Matt 25:40
As a single mom, I frequent the food pantry at least a few times a year, although I avoid it like the plague. In fact, I was just there the day before yesterday. They know me there, and they know I hate to go there, because I cry every time I have to give in and go there.
Ya know, when I was engaged to a millionaire, shortly before the wedding, the boy scouts came around for a food drive when I was at his house. He said go get stuff for the food drive. I started taking special things out of the cupboard to give, because they could have been so very easily replaced, and I KNEW what it was like to have to go to a pantry. I wanted to give these people a blessing, because I was in a position to do so. (I was not raised in a culture of poverty, but I have been a single mom for a long time, and you do what you have to do) He came in, saw what I was doing, and told me to put it back. He started taking out- the garbage, the outdated stuff, the things we would never use or didn't want- in other words, cleaning out the cupboard. Instead of throwing it in the garbage he gave it to the boyscouts to give to the poor. That was when we broke up. I thought it showed a serious character flaw, serious enough to cause me to break up with a millionaire and return to a life of barely surviving.
By the way, I was exagerating to make a point when I said I eat your garbage. County health departments will not allow food pantries to give out outdated food. THEY have enough common sense to THROW IT AWAY! :BangHead: -
Theres nothing wrong with outdated canned goods, only fresh refrigerated foods. It even takes a long time for unopened mayo to go bad.
Here we have a lot of salvaged stores and most everything is outdated. But if your going to eat. We don't feel as if we're eating garbage, or are less because we shop salvaged. And I've bought stuff there you can't buy locally. Take for instance my grandmothers family is from the middle east, I love middle eastern foods. So I've bought maybe 10 jars of grapeleaves for $.19 each, at a different store I gave $1.00 each these are $6. jars regular, these aren't available anywhere else here, even for regular price.
I did once buy hellmanns mayo for $.99, not outdated. -

I've written over Fourteen Thousand (14,000 or 14K) posts on this venue alone and some are want to act like they don't even know me  Well, I guess I'll have to toot my own horn.
1. Only about 2% of my donations to my church's food closet are past the 'sell before' date (not 'give away before' date). About 8% of my contributions to my church's food closet is new food. The other 90% of my family's contributions to my church's food closet is money.
2. I carefully noted above that I give away good food not bad.
3. My first wife worked on the Food Closet Committee for some ten years. She interviewed people who came to the church for help (not to mention find people in the church that might need something). She died in December 1999 of Liver Cancer.
4. I got a job in 1976 (retired from it in 2006). Of the first million dollars I earned on that job (1976-2000), I gave 12% of what the Lord blessed me with to my local church. For those who remember where the calculator button is on your desktop, that would be $120,000.
5. My pastor (who has us do the food closet) is a Religious Conservative (Fundamentalist) and a Political Liberal (Democrat). His belief is that it is the duty of the state (generic governmental unit) to provide food & housing for those who cannot afford it.
The barking dogs shouldn't have barked this bear up a tree :(

Biofuels to help stop Global warming will starve humans...
The fewer amount of humans on the planet will also help stop global warming....
That way Gore's precious penguins will survive...
Ain't that sweet...
My slogan... "Help stop Global warming... turn on an air conditioner" -
I saw on tv not long ago about food prices, and stuff made with grain, breads, cereals, etc. going really high and may become scarse because so much of it is being used to make fuel.

Thank you so much for all your efforts to help those of us who, for whatever reason, find ourselves in a position of need. I realize your efforts often go unnoticed and unappreciated. But thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping those of us who truly need it. Your kindness is greatly needed and greatly appreciated. May the Lord bless you. -
I think that most crisis in America are exagerated to sell headlines. Are people hoarding food? Maybe a little, but I bet people in third world countries would slap us in the face if they read some of our headlines about our miniscule problems. I'm only going to be able to gorge myself with two pork chops tonight instead of of three. What a famine!
