However as our mediator Jesus identified with John's baptism on our behalf.
baptism speaks of Identification with......1cor 10 1pet 3:21,rom6
b] Jesus identifies with those he came to save...as the new exodus for the people of God
c] The Father makes known His sending of the Son for this purpose
d]So that the people would realize they need to listen to Jesus as the full final prophet...compare Mt 17:5 -
I want to use another passage(of the same event spoken of here in Matthew), to show you what I think Matthew 3:16 means:
John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
I think the main part of this is that when Jesus was baptized by John, and then the Spirit came "upon" Him, it was a sign to John, to show him that the Messiah was here, and that it was He who he baptized. We that come afterwards, are baptized after this manner, to show as a "sign" that we now belong to God. Also, it was a sign of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus that was to come approx 3.5 years later. I hope this helps!!

That which I bolded and underlined, I LIKE!!!!  -
I was looking for something more like let's take A which I think to be the easier question. Baptized therefore immersed under the water signifying his death as in Romans 5:10 first part For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, or say maybe 1 John 1:7 the part about and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. OR Rev. 1:5 the part that says Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
That is scripture backing up whatever it was/is that is symbolized. -
The baptism of Jesus was His annointing, when He was annointed with the Spirit. This was also His manifestation to Israel of who He was, the long awaited Messiah.
