Should the 'Fourth Estate', become the fourth branch of government?
The press is interpreting Bush's conduct as different than his predecessors. Even tho' they did the same.
Should they be allowed such influence?

Bush's conduct is different than his predecessors. Why do you think people feel the way they do about him?
Shooting the messenger isn't going to help. Bush got a free ride early on from the media. Now that his presidency is imiploding, it's not so good.
Go figure.
Some years ago, the Castros and Saddams of the world proposed a "new information order" in which governments would all control news to be "responsible." The UN was actually considering it. I wonder how Bush would look at that, now. At least some of his followers seem to think that a free press shouldn't be "allowed." -
It is a scary thing when people start talking about limiting the freedom of the press to criticize those in power. That is a hallmark of totalitarianism.
-
So, in your fourth estate polarization, I should let the press limit the truth in regards to my right to know the truth so that I can guide by political thought and expression by truth instead of lies?
That is not only well written and a great expression of fourth estate thought, it is a mark of your desire for your flavor of totalitarianism.

Daisy,
I guess it would have to be you or me. But, after a lot of thought, I think it might be best left up to a court decision of slander against a sitting president. Now wouldn't that get the ACLU up in arms!
Personally, I am against holding the press to too high of a standard of journalistic ethics. But, lying to the people is just plain wrong. IMHO.

removed the really good, but cheap, shot.

Speaking of understanding, EG, what in the world are you trying to say here? You make no sense at all. Not trying to be rude, trying to figure out what you are talking about. -
Not what I said. But your replies are representative of those news reporters that lie, cheat, and steal to give a new and enhanced meaning to 'doublespeak'. Speaking of which - are the microphones still working in your living room? Isn't it a shame when the fourth estate can tape your deepest thoughts? I am just glad that I am not on their side.
Now back to what I actually said before our wanna be reporters twisted it:
-
EG, if you could just make your point, that would really help. -
Lagardo
The point. I made this several times.
But, do you like that freedom? I mean the freedom of the press to lie to the people? -
Mag
The last time you crossed your poles and thought that allowed you to accuse me of things that just are not right, I confronted you.
Too bad my quick and clear response to your anger hurt your feelings - you should try being a little less angry in your tone.
Do I need to confront you again? If not, then a simple apology would do for a start. You do have the freedom to apologize underneath the freedom of speech. -
EG,
Freedom of the press doesn't mean that they can be held to task by the government. Their only restriction is who buys their papers or watches their news. It's the market of information, or disinformation perhaps. A press who abuses that freedom is nothing new but goes back, in the US, to the first days of our new republic. It's not the best system but it beats what comes in second. -
Where am I angry in my tone? I merely said, I don't know what you are trying to say. I said restricting the press is a hallmark of totalitarianism. Somehow, you are not only missing what people are saying, but are also not making your thoughts understandable. I will not play any ad hominem games with you. Call me whatever you want, I will not drop down to your level. Base your arguments on facts and evidence, not on personal attacks because you disagree with people. -

Sometimes we on the Right get it right! ;)
-
Also, I would imagine that I probably agree with EG more than I disagree with him on, and I understand his frustration at the press, but historically it's nothing new.
-
From the right (my left)
Yes we do agree alot . . . probably why we are so alone on our positions.
;)
