I suppose we can bow to Jewish tradiions if we believe we'll truly offend someone (i.e., cause them to sin against their conscience). But my question was more about why anyone wouldn't spell out God in the first place. I think I got back enough answers to conclude that it is merely based on Jewish tradition.
