I met Mr. Steinbrenner at a funeral I performed for his HS track coach. The Boss was a very nice man who had helped his old coach to dry out and then got him a "job" helping out at the Yankees minor league program. He had gone out of his way to get there. I presented the plan of salvation during the service. He had a line of people wantng to meet him so wasn't able to ask him anything spiritually. But I was impressed at his helping his old coach.

I've read that the Yankees rake in $750 mill per year, so $500 mill is pocket change as a one time tax payment. Hence, being able to afford a 200+ mill payroll each and every year!

I pray the above did not apply to GS, that he found salvation in Christ, even as his health waned in the last couple of years. If not, "what shall it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world yet lose his soul"??

That's not the way it works. The Yankees are worth a billion or more (not to mention other holdings of Steinbrenner). To pay the 500 million in taxes would likely require that the family sell the team, just as the Robbie family had to do with the Miami Dolphins a few years ago.

It's sad that the tax system is confiscatory like this. It damages the ability to parents to pass down to children those things which they have worked a lifetime to build.

I think Steinbrenner, as a whole, was bad for baseball. But his family shouldn't have to suffer financially because of this. And because he died this year, they won't.
