    Remember into the late 1960s, there was a hierarchy of ratings. If two enlisted men had the same Time in Service and Time in Rank, their ratings determined who was senior. Boastwain's Mate was the senior rate and Steward was the lowest.

    Was in 58-62, never heard of that. Just keep learnin don't we :)

    It usually didn't matter outside the Chiefs' Mess.

    I remember the system but it was never used in everyday Navy life.
