Barlow: The demand for fresh water in our world over the next 30 years is far outstripping the supply. Not that the water isn't somewhere on the planet still -- but we have polluted it, diverted it, allowed it to get poisoned by seawater. One way or another, we have taken accessible clean water ... and we have rendered it unusable. We take massive amounts [of water] and we irrigate the desert, where it evaporates. We're pumping groundwater all over the world far faster that it can be replenished by nature. We are actually running out of fresh, clean water everywhere in the world, including here in North America. We have to give up this myth of abundance. We have come to the limits of the planet.

If we didn't have global warming? Water evaporates that eliminates water from our planet. Either way, being the world is 400 quasitrillion years old, shouldn't water have been extinct 399 quasitrillion years ago? I mean, even ice evaporates!

Just thought of something....
If Global warming is melting the glaciers...
thus releasing the water held captive in the glaciers...
Said water then evaporates....

Wouldn't that ADD water to our water cycle?

So instead of making water disappear, wouldn't Global warming increase cloud cover? And in this case, wouldn't it rain more, or in more places on the earth?

Maybe Desserts will be blooming places....

For those interested in a 2nd grade science answer, water on the planet in solid, liquid and gaseous form are in equilibrium with each other. That equilibrium is dependent on the temperature. When the global temperature increases, the equilibrium shifts towards the melting and evaporation direction rather than the freezing and condensing direction. In cooler areas where there is ice and water, it will mean more water. In warmer areas where there is some water and a lot of water vapour, it will mean less water.

You are right, I should have said warm drier areas instead of warm areas with some water and a lot of water vapour.

Hot humid areas will of course rain and also mountain ranges cause rain formation on one side of the mountain. Global warming may cause a slight decrease in water levels from increased evaporation but probably not a noticeable one in these areas, particularly where there hasn't been massive deforestation. While there will still be rain, the equillibrium of liquid to gas will shift towards the gaseous side of things resulting in increased humidity.

Hot drier areas like most temperate inland plains with few trees where a lot of farming occurs in North America, will experience more dramatic decreases in water levels from increased evaporation.

NASA - Goddard Institute for Space Studies - Surface Temperature Analysis

NASA's analysis which also includes satellite data suggests that 2007 was on par with 1998 and lower than 2005 which they calculate to have been the hottest year on record. They also have some data on the effects of El Nino-La Nina and solar irradiation which they considered to have been in the "cooling phase" of their cycles in 2007.
