Is what took placed here Mathew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: a symbol of what Jesus is describing here? Luke 12:50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
What is the baptism he is speaking of in the Luke passage?
So that means the reality of the baptism of Jesus was his death and resurrection. Baptized = his death. Coming out of the water= his resurrection.
Why the Spirit like a dove in this sequence? Why not the dove before he went into the water? Does the sequence of when the dove lit on him have anything to do with what he told the disciples concerning the Holy Spirit in John 16:7? Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you..
I'm sure only Jesus knew the significance of baptism at the time--that it would eventually be seen as a picture of his death, burial and resurrection.
Jesus' baptism was, in my view, his identification with John the Baptist and his message.
Until Paul revealed that it was a picture of the gospel.
As to the question about the timing of the Spirit's descending like a dove--I know everything but I don't know that.
The luke baptism.....is suffering and death as our surety Heb7:22-25.
Baptism....speaks of Identification.
Spirit Baptism identifies and unites us to The Lord Jesus Christ, in His
death,burial,resurrection,ascencion.
