Tough call. My first response is to say that they used this chant everywhere, so it obviously wasn't a racial thing. However, the other team didn't know this, so it could easily have been misconstrued that way.

All in all, I think that the team that chanted should apologize, but not that they did it, but that it was misconstrued. The offended team should accept the apology, and that should be the end of it.

There should have been no apology. People want to be offended by anything American even while benefiting from this great country. Their offense is not a matter of genuineness.

I'll go with your first response.

The other team can construe it any way they want, so long as they just get over themselves.

    No apology necessary. IMO

    Patriotism is not racism.

Ignorance and stupidity is no excuse to claim an insult.

Why would a US high school playing a US high school inside the US even think of such a chant?

Maybe the other team had many illegal immigrants? Again, how is it racist? It's a matter of citizenship, not race.

Why were they chanting “USA” if they were both from San Antonio high schools? Or am I missing something?

I, personally, would never apologize for loving and supporting my country.

I agree. I am not sure of their intentions, but maybe their patriotism was just overflowing.
