It's a strange line between humor and vomit....
On one hand... I wanna laugh, because a old white woman is trying to rap... which makes me think of that old woman in the movie, "The Wedding Singer"...(I say hip hop, Hipptity Hoppity... and ya don't stop...)
On the other hand....I'm sickened....Because they're really serious about this... I mean, How the heck more can they butcher up God's Holy Word and make it more appealing the World????
They should rot in the deepest part of HELL for it, I say... Leave my Bible ALONE PLEASE!!!! what more can expect FROM THE GREAT WHORE OF BABYLON?!?!?!? AKA THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH!!!! They've been trying to distroy the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for Centuries!

I have to agree with SFIC on this one. Why do we have to turn the Word of God, our praise and worship of God, and the Gospel into a freak show to attract people to Jesus? The Holy Spirit is quite capable of drawing people to the Lord. Our responsibility is to preach the Gospel in a straight forward manner, and let the Lord to the rest.
I know it's not the same thing, but I remember reading a rhyming NT about 10 years ago in a Bible book store. But I have never seen one since.
Of course in e-sword there is an "extra" called the "Psalms of David in Metre"
Here is 23rd Psalm:
1 The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want.
2 He makes me down to lie
In pastures green: he leadeth me
the quiet waters by.
3 My soul he doth restore again;
and me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
ev'n for his own name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale,
yet will I fear none ill:
For thou art with me; and thy rod
and staff me comfort still.
5 My table thou hast furnished
in presence of my foes;

In the metre you posted, the words are still there, the meaning is still there, the message is still there.
Not so with the hip-hop version.

Tiny Tim, I like that post. This reminds me of 1 Cor 9:20 where Paul talks about being a Jew if preaching the Gospel to Jews, Gentiles if preaching the Gospel to Gentiles, and the reference to the unknown god.
Paul is saying to find something in common with the people you are talking to Jesus about, and relate that to the Gospel. He is not saying become them, or pervert the word of God.
If I was told by the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel with a former bank robber, I wouldnt get a gun, rob a bank, them come to him and say, hey, we are alike, do you want to hear about Jesus? No, I would hope I could find something around at the time to talk about to capture his interest and maybe share the Gospel through that avenue. We are to bring them to us. We are not to become them.

It does matter if the message is changed. Paul warned us in Galatians 1:8,9 that if anyone else brings another gospel let him be accursed.
We are not to even give heed to seducing spirits that will turn the truth into a lie.

Sorry for the length but it's hard to hold my peace.
I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. I put these in the catagories of music/songs which are not always sound in theology. They are not trying to rewrite the bible so this is in no way butchering GODS word.
Think of the song mary don't you weep... There is a verse that says Pharaohs Army drowned in the red sea followed again by Mary don't you weep tell Martha not to mourn.
Mary was not there during this event. Is that sound theology?
I have many seniors that line out old Hymns. I love hymns and often sing one myself before preaching (with my no singing self). As I had to point out to them, there are many Hymns that are no where close to theologically sound yet we sing them to the glory of GOD.
No one still has answered my question on Jesus keep me near the cross. Why would one want to stay near the cross? Is it the cross that saves? Then why would you want to stay by it instead of going out witnessing?
Thinking of the cross, do you have one on your Church? I do, and even had a light installed to light it at night. Now bump that up against this commandment and tell why we have a cross or pictures of Jesus, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
I can't tell you how to win the youth to Christ but I will say I consider that the greatest task we as preachers have today. If we loose them there is no future to the Church and this world will become more hopeless than it is today. You gather youth as the Lord leads you.
There are a lot of youth around my Church and currently my young adult choir is larger than my adult choir. My young adult sunday school class is my largest class. They are the predominant portion of my mid week service (ok, they are the choir that now sings at that service). Thay are often the ones that go with me when I preach at other Churches. They bring in more new members or potential members than any other group in my Church. All of this with a vulnerable age group and in a gang infested city.
Lastly I will say, just about all of them invite me to their graduations, continuations etc... I'm like one of the family. I regard this as my greatest earthly reward from GOD. It is HIS way of telling me, "well done, keep up the good work". I have single mothers in my Church. I am the closest influence to a father many of their young men have. I don't take that job lightly.
How many of your young people invite you to their events or seek your advice on Lifes personal issues like dating or do you think this girl will interfere with my walk with Christ. They know there is much about this hip-hop world I don't know but they also know each will check the other and will let me know if any of them cross the line. That is the importance of open communication and coming out the office before and after service.
Guys, come down out the pulpit and get in the midst of you people. It is ok to preach an unadulterated Gospel. However, it does not penetrate if it is neither relevant or real in their lives. I go to where they are and bring the message of the LORD to them and not preach it at them. Like Ezek, I sat where they sat...

Has anyone here studied a passage by rewriting it yourself as a paraphrase? To put it into some personal perspective? I have and that's just what I see this as. I don't think the book is meant to rewrite Scriptures but it's a 'prayer book' with other stuff in it too. I don't see anything wrong with this as long as it doesn't REPLACE the Bible (and it should have been written by a person who really knows the lingo. LOL)

My question about street lingo is why do we want to magnify on it? Shouldn't we be promoting and encouraging kids to progress - to refine their use of the language, rather than validate their rebellious sub-culture? What is so great about hip-hop? Was it developed as a way to communicate? NO, it was developed as a way to hide communication from others around them and as a rebellious refusal to adopt, to blend into, the larger culture around them. Isn't it racist in the root? Isn't it a rebuttal against "Anglo" (white) culture? So why are we getting hip-hop dictionaries? So we can communicate with people that don't want us to communicate with them? What's next, hip-hop classes for those that are unfortunately well educated in the English language? A bachelor's program in ebonics at the Bible college?

Lebuick wrote an elegant post at the top of page 6 explaining why stuff like this is important. I'm not into hip hop culture, but neither am I into recreating a 1950s, 60's, or 70's church mentality. That generation blew it!
It was that generation that lost the youth to the world.. now WE are trying to get them back... and all you do is complain about the ways that it can be done?
He posted a good post, but the only thing some of you can get out of it is the ability to complain because someone finally pointed out to you that hymns can be worldy too. Get away from the cross and move on! Yes we need to preach it for salvation.... but grow up in the Lord.
There is more to Christianity than salvation... it is time for discipleship.
That means moving away from the cross and spreading news about what happened on the cross...
Quit worshipping the cross, and start worshipping the one who died on the cross, and then rose again.
Another song that is akin to idol worship is "the old rugged cross" Think about it, we sing a song about a piece of wood. God gave his son on the cross. That is what we should worship.... God wants worship, not songs about the creation....
