Home Economics of Anxious Times: Dyeing Your Hair in the Kitchen Sink

Have you changed your buying habits?

Sales of starter sewing kits have shot up by 30 percent at Wal-Mart as families forgo the tailor. Landscaping companies have suffered a 7 percent drop in revenue over the past year. Procter & Gamble said that it has noticed more questions from customers about how to dye their hair at home to match salon coloring.

The recession has had a powerful effect on the American state of mind. A Washington Post-ABC News poll released yesterday shows Americans have grown increasingly insecure about their finances since mid-September, as fears about making mortgage payments have spread and more believe the economy is in a long-term, serious decline.

These feelings have helped set off a change in behavior so pronounced marketers and businesses have coined a name for it. They call it "insourcing": doing yourself what you once gladly paid others to do.

Two-thirds of those responding to the new poll said they've cut back on spending, including nearly a third who have pulled back "sharply." Americans across income groups said they are opening their wallets less often these days

Yep. Things are going to get worse. People are definitely cutting corners any way they can, IF they are fortunate enough to still have a job and house with a kitchen sink.

Unfortunately, it may take a while to undo the economy done by the conservative economic policies that have been in place under Republican rule during this decade.

However, I am confident that God has blessed us with the leadership in the White House and the Congress to lead us out of this GOP mess.

I'm confident that the occupants of the White House is there because they have been appointed by God. I'm just not sure it is for our blessing - it may be for our judgment. Time will tell...

My hair grows fast and haircuts are always a snag: Look better with short hair now that fat and gray...... Trying now to let it grow out so can do in an 'up' do , but gets caught in a nasty in-between stage where it wont do. Got tired of going to hair dresser, being quoted one price..... then charged another for the cut 'cause it was a styled cut'....... and they expect a tip? Just how did price for service and tipping get started? In all the years, I've done this cause its expected..... yet I never worked for over $10/hour in a 'service' and noone ever 'tipped'.

Forget the dye: Home dyes years ago....now too frequent to bother.

Yes.... hems, buttons, open seams, and factory made wear...... I imagine much will change as people do their own.

Now if I can find some decent thread....... not the polyester marvel which keeps breaking and snagging!

Ken, I pray that God will bless you four fold, of the blessings which you think the White House will bestow upon the rest of us...... I also pray that He will show mercy. And if at some point, you feel a conviction about anything..... that He will also forgive when you repent.

^^^ The above post is icky, in my opinion (Windcatcher's).

I do home dye jobs. I also give dh and our kids haircuts. I always have, though, so it's not because of the economy.

I don't clip coupons but wish I could. They don't do coupons over here.

I do my own sewing and crocheting.

I have a goat and intend on using the milk for cheese and yogurt.

I garden and can/preserve everything.

I shop for clothes at a second-hand store (fabulous imports for cheap!).

I buy used books.

I'm frugal. Always have been. It's not a new thing.
