Interesting. I was thinking that churches meeting in the woods occurred during the time of the Soviet Union? A Jehovah’s Witness friend of mine complains constantly about Putin and Russia so I guess the arrests of the JWs continues. Russian Baptists are very interesting. Everyday Russian life must be all struggle.

The Orthodox Church learned nothing from Communism. They persecuted Christians under the tsars, and are now persecuting Christians under the fascists. The basic difference between being under Communism and not was that the Orthodox were persecuted as well.

“Holy, filthy Russia.” In the 1950s in small town Indiana all we heard about the Orthodox was that they revered icons and were like the RCC.

Of course, the Orthodox don't consider themselves like the Catholic, and vice versa.

Being "the one true church" is no doubt a heavy burden to bear, but such needn't persecute other believers because of it. Obviously, the Orthodox are not the only ones who do this; many state religions have and do.

Russia may well end up with yet another Ras-Putin to help bring them to their knees once again. Better to repent now.

Actually, the Russian Orthodox Church does consider itself "Catholic", just not Roman Catholic.

Yes, I was abbreviating, using "the" to indicate the separate groups. The ROC considers Moscow the third Rome, but does not consider itself in the Roman Catholic fold, nor do Eastern Orthodox Churches in general. There are some odd exceptions.

A group considering itself "the one true church" will naturally see itself as both orthodox and catholic by definition.

Please enlighten us at to what the 'odd exceptions' to Eastern Orthodox Churches considering themselves Roman Catholic? There are Eastern Catholic Churches that have Orthodox like liturgy but are fully under Rome but are NOT Eastern Orthodox.

LOL. You are free to expand on the nuances of the entire gamut of all those churches. And while you're at it, you're free to admit that your own church is in no way orthodox. So, have at it, W. :Thumbsup

It is just this simple. Either Eastern Orthodox Churches are within the Roman Catholic Church (as you are stating) or they are not. You are not telling the truth. Prove your statement or state you don't know what you are talking about. You are also free to admit that your 'faction' is in no way orthodox, but we know you wouldn't be a part of it if you believed so, nor would I be part of mine.

Let me make it simple for you. List the Eastern Orthodox Churches that have the pope as their Bishop. You stated there are 'odd exceptions'. Name just one, or admit you don't know what you are talking about.

 Oh, W, your posts are only further demonstrating my point. Let me make it even simpler for you. As already indicated, play your petty little semantics games with yourself or someone else. My post stands as is, so you can misinterpret and rail about it to your heart's discontent. It's obviously a sore spot with you, so I'm likely to poke it over and over, especially since you're trying to make it so personal.

You made a false statement and you won't admit it. Maybe you should read up before you make false accusations. No 'semantics' at all. Either your statement was a lie or it was not. Put up your proof or apologize.

I shan't apologize for your ridiculous papist assumptions and misinterpretations of a brief comment nor further entertain your false dichotomy, though it is pleasant to say so again.

Walter, the correct phraseology IIRC is there are Eastern Rite Churches in the RCC.

You are correct. However, they are NOT Eastern Orthodox Churches within the Catholic Church which is what RighteousTemperance claimed. Big difference between an Eastern Orthodox Church and an Eastern Rite Catholic Church. He does not know the difference or care what the difference would be. He uses the bigoted term 'papists' to describe me. To him we are all hell bound idol worshipers who could not possibly know Jesus as Savior and Lord. I know his type, I have debated bigots like him for years on this board.

Sorry to disappoint, but I use the descriptor too.

Papist an anti-Catholic slur, referring to the Roman Catholic Church, its teachings, practices, or adherents.

Regardless of the bigotry. The FACT remains that Baptists just can't seem to ever admit when they are caught in error. There are NO Eastern Orthodox Churches which are part of the Church of Rome.as was claimed in the above post of RighteousTemperance There ARE Eastern Rite Catholic Churches which are part of the Catholic Church. I don't expect anyone to ADMIT they are wrong here. I remember mentioning that there were married priests in The Catholic Church. DHK called me a LIAR and told me the only married priests in The Catholic Church were former Episcopal or Anglican priests which had become Catholics. I then had to show him that the Eastern Rites (of which there are many) of The Catholic Church have married priests and have had for many years. Was this ever admitted? Of course not!

Slow your roll. This is a denominational site. You are the outsider. Folks like you remind me of a tourist wandering into the Abbey Tavern in San Francisco whistling "My Father's Sash."
    I'll unpack the analogy.
    • The Abbey Tavern is a longstanding Irish\Fenian pub in San Francisco's Richmond District.
    • My Father's Sash is a march sung and played by various Loyalist fife and drum bands during Marching Season both in Ulster and Scotland.

W, you might as well get off of your holier-than-thou high horse. Your objections to my referring to your attacks as papist when calling me a liar for daring touch on the subject of the intrigues, machinations and persecutions that led to certain odd divisions of Catholic and Orthodox are beyond ridiculous.
