Jimmy C--your plan sounds balanced. It's close to one of the Weight Watchers programs. I've been a lifetime member of WW and lost 25 lbs. in 1989 and have kept most of it off. I am healthier in my 40's than in my 20's. I exercise 45 minutes to 1 hr per day 6 days a week. I get up in get it done in the morning.

Sensible balanced meal plan--includes <gasp> good carbs, veggies/fruit, protein, healthy oils
    Water
    Exercise

Those things are the keys--not some fad diet that will may you lose fast --only to gain it back.

I love being in good shape--it helps me w/the ministries God has for me to do. I just added a spin class 2 evenings a week. I want to build my endurance. I am hoping dh and I can go on a construction missions trip to Hawaii in February or March. I don't want to poop out--but be like the Energizer Bunny. lol

Take care of your temples y'all!

I’ve always done an aerobic type of weightlifting, high reps of 3 sets of 15 always trying to get 18 to 20 reps on the last set and if I get them I move up the weight for next time. I will do 12 to 14 different exercises and usually get them done in about an hour and 10 minutes when at peak. I always pay close attention to posture and correct movement rather than pounds and will work in a couple easier exercises in the routine where I need to catch my breath.

I’ve been really slack for the last three years and just going in and doing a few sets here and there to keep somewhat tight and have been getting away with that until recently. My rule is I don’t buy a jean with a larger size waist and surrendered only one inch in the last 20 years. Well recently the pants are getting tight and I’m not getting away with the few sets here and there anymore. Since I had a 21 year old young man asking me to train him I agreed to knowing it would also keep me honest and accountable because I will be expecting him to come over 3 time a week and he will be expecting me to work out with him. We started 2 weeks ago; WHAT an eye opener at 47 to try and get back into that routine. I’m just starting to get over the soreness trying not to be a wimp while tell him no “pain no gain”.

I’m really feeling good about it now that I’m beginning to get over the shock of how much I’ve dropped in conditioning and ability. I did start slow and low just to get through a simple routine and add a little each time. I’ve been wanting to get serious for a while and to see my appetite increasing, metabolism changing, testosterone, posture and things beginning to shift in the right directions is very rewarding. It’s going to be a long road and I’m going to stay on it and see just how much I can accomplish in this aging body. I’m thinking of training to enter a wrestling tournament next summer and see if I can’t once again bench twice my weight sometime before 50. I think goals are important whatever they are because when you reach them it is very encouraging to see the progress and that it can be done.

On a side note; I talked to my mother this morning and she told me my sister is going in to get fitted for an electric wheelchair because she can’t get around any more. She is 49 at least a hundred pounds over weight on a small frame and it is absolutely killing her and it breaks my heart that I can’t get through to her to address the problem and defeat it. I don’t know if I would call it SIN but I definitely call it SAD and denial. Motivation not excuses has got to be key; the longer you fall the harder it is to get back up without it.

I have to work out early - it is the only time of the day that is mine! I try to be up between 5 and 5:30 so that I can be to work on time! I have tried exercising in the evening but it just doesnt work for me.

Adkins worked great as a jumpstart and Southbeach seems like it would work as well - but at some point I had to start eating like a human - but a sensible one! I always thought it was funny that the SBC weight plan started at 2nd Baptist in Houston. John Bisano was the pastor and a rather large man! That plan is very much like weight watchers as well.

Hi Songbird, saw your post re. WW, my wife uses the one online. She likes that better than the meetings. She also goes to Curves, both programs are working for her.
I wanted to go to Curves, but she said ladies only. I asked her if I wore a wig, they would think I was a woman. My wife said even if I wore a wig and makeup, I would never pass as woman.
    :D

If we encourage a drunk to try and stop drinking, and offer him ways to do it, if we help a person on drugs with advice to stop, we are doing a good thing. When we encourage someone to lose weight, we are judgemental and told to take the log out of our eye. I just don't get it.

    Jimmy C,

I never thought I could be an early exerciser--but I started in Oct. 2000 and haven't stopped since. It

Bruren777--tell your wife I said Way to Go! If she's interested I hang out on the Core Board--she'll know what that means. I'm sure you're a handsome man, but listen to your wife--don't go to Curves.

Bro. Curtis--I guess we'll just have to be an example. I do get snide remarks now and then from my overweight friends. But remind them that I was once overweight and I work really hard to take care of myself. Oh well...

I like the way this thread is "shaping" up.

    Take care.

I would suggest to anyone First Place, a christian weight loss bible study. The food plan is taken from American Diabetes Association, just about the healthest diet I've seen.
The study encourages bible study and prayer, healthy eating, exercise, encouraging others.(Something we rarey get, encouragement)

Hey, I'm 192 and bench 285. Okay Okay, 285 was a few years ago and I was closer to 200 pounds then, but I thought it was a nice coicedence. Of course, I'm 6'4"

I come from a family of overweight people. I'm the only one that is not on the heavier side and I myself have struggle some with food. I only often encourgament for others. Forget losing weight. Instead strive to be healthy. Eat fruits and vegatables a plenty. Eat lean meats and whole grains. Stay away from drinks with calories, even fruit juices. Its fine to eat pasta, or Wendy's, or ice cream, but in moderation. Make them the exception instead of the norm. Exercise and lift weights, especially the last one as it will improve your strength, posture, and increase your metabolism. Over time you will lose weight and will lose it for good.

No one is judging others for being overweight. I have my own sins which or at least equally as bad if not worse then lack of moderation in food. But it is true that MOST americans are not overweight because of medical deficincies but because they eat to much high calorie low nutrution food and exercise to little. Most our not aware they do this, since they may not be eating a lot of actual food. But things like Ritz Crackers, or Cheese, or Orange Juice have a lot of calories and add up fast. I have lots of friends who complain they can't lose weight or their bodies will not let them go below such and such when in reality they are not aware of the calorie content of foods we have begun to take as normative in our lives, like breads, crackers, sauces, salid dressings, you name it.

I can say that the article did convict me. I am about 212 pounds, on a fairly large frame. I wear a dress size 18.

I am overweight because I eat too much of the wrong thing and I dont exersize at all (save for chasing my 2 little ones around)

The article was rude, but I have to admit, it woke me up a little bit.

And I have been walking every day since I found that old audio tape. Not going to use a measuring tape, yet. ;)

CD players came out in 1985. I was one of the first to get one. The Sony Discman came out in the early 90's. Also about that time, the major music & cideo chains announced one by one that they would no longer be selling vinyl. A few years ago, most of those same stores stopped selling videotaped movies (due to the demand for DVD's). Several of those stores have also stopped selling audiotape selections in the last few years.

Ed still has all his 8 tracks and a player. Shhhh, don't tell him, that I stored them in the garage.

His 100's of record albums including some 78's are stored in the closet and yes, we still have a record player.

Johnv, you have to remember that we live in Oklahoma, miles and miles from California where inovations take place.

It just takes us awhile to catch up with the times. But we do have computers.

oh BY the Way, what is this Ipod thingy that all my grandchildren have?

Well. both Moody and Spurgeon neared or topped 300lbs on small frames so if God can use such terrible gluttons as they then give me double their mantle.

Enough said! The author of the that article may want to spend more time praying than griping about a preacher he obviously didn't like.

Saw this on a t-shirt once:
If the body is a Temple-then mine is a
    Mega-Church!

OUCH! That hits too close to home. I've lost 65lbs in the last year, primarily due to depression. I eat only one meal a day, and then only with extreme effort. I always wanted to lose the weight-just not this way.

Any chance you could provide some instances where a company fired a worker because of their weight? I'm curious to know what companies would do this.
