Washington—Sunni extremists in Iraq have occupied what was once Saddam Hussein's premier chemical-weapons production facility, a complex that still contains a stockpile of old weapons, State Department and other U.S. government officials said.

U.S. officials don't believe the Sunni militants will be able to create a functional chemical weapon from the material. The weapons stockpiled at the Al Muthanna complex are old, contaminated and hard to move, officials said.

What are the U.S. options in Iraq? Can Netflix do late Night? Who is Kevin McCarthy? The famed Walt Disney estate is up for sale. Photo: Getty
Nonetheless, the capture of the chemical-weapon stockpile by the forces of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, known as ISIS or ISIL, the militant group that is seizing territory in the country, has grabbed the attention of the U.S.

"We remain concerned about the seizure of any military site by the ISIL," Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, said in a written statement. "We do not believe that the complex contains CW materials of military value and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to safely move the materials."

After the media went to all that effort to say there was no WMD's in Iraq, and that Bush made one more "boo-boo" in his rationale for invading Iraq, now we read and hear there are, in fact, WMDs in Iraq, but they just need assembling and some Duracell batteries to make them deadly again?

I watched this on FOX last week, and had to scratch my head and ask that same question. We were told they weren't there, and now suddenly they are there, just in need of some assembly even though they may be old and ineffective, the fact is they are there!

Someone owes Bush an apology!

Yep. Better have oxygen available. You'll pass out often enough to cause drain bamage.

Seriously, State says "We remain concerned"? I get "concerned" when we're in for severe weather, summer or winter. I get "concerned" when I notice my tires have under a quarter inch of tread left. I get "concerned" when construction loan interest rates go more than three-quarters of a point over prime.

State, however, is looking at a bunch of highly-trained, technically savvy full-blown fanatical Islamists holding a chemical weapons facility IAEA said wasn't there 12 years ago, and they "... remain concerned"?

Bush would be arming the B-2s and sending them out of central Missouri on a 30-hour S&D mission. That's what Obama should be doing. But he hasn't the guts.

How convenient. Right when the neocons need a pretext for more military intervention . . . ta da!

Let's not talk about how Washington has been funding and arming these extremists for years and using them as proxy forces of regime change in the middle east and north Africa.

Let's not talk about how the neocons knew Iraq would end up as it is today in 1994.

Let's blame the liberals to try to justify the neocon's lies instead.

The report I heard said that these captured chemicals would be disposed in the ocean-- I hope not close to the Albacore farms. Now we will have irradiated, mercury laced, tuna with a little mustard, serin, etal on the side.
An interesting surf: disposal of chemical weapons in the ocean. This stuff is worse than radioactive waste--which we have little control over either.

We need survey meters and chemical detectors at the super markets.

We seem a little late on good intelligence in the current conflict.

Big George still messed up when he did not take out Saddam the first time.

Little George should get our apologies--for having elected him twice--he was in way over his head.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Those were not these chemicals those were the Syrian chemicals. We do not have control of Hussien's chemicals.

You title is very misleading. The WSJ article title says nothing about WMD. The correct title is:

Sunni Extremists in Iraq Occupy Hussein's Chemical Weapons Facility

I checked several articles on this topic and none talked about WMD, just about chemical weapons.

We have known that he had chemical weapons. He used them on his own people.

Gas is not a weapon of mass destruction, not to be compared to nuclear bombs in any measure.

Very dishonest Rev.

Sounds like we have control over little to nothing. The chemical business is becoming rather stealthy. The history of chemical disposal is really interesting. Someone is being duped for sure. The dupers are still in control--getting things lined up for The Antichrist.

Re: WMD definition, the Jews may have some input concerning how massive their near annihilation was in WWII. Millions were gassed with the same kinds of gases, maybe only hundreds at one session. How many does it take to be called massive? The Kurds would have an opinion as well. Saddam gassed them from time to time. Iranians too.

An interesting surf: History of the Bayer Aspirin.

Let the Brothers of Allah fight it out--without us. We could use the money for our own oil fields.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

UH...I am embarrassed for you. In your zeal to not have any WMD's in Irag and thereby vindicating Bush you overlook that chemical weapons are WMD's and those chemical weaposn was the very WMD's that Bush said was there.

Crabby the dishonesty is yours and your alone.
