I love the Grateful Dead.
Sorry. I know that just came out of nowhere, but I was having a discussion on another board and I always think it's funny that, even among Christians who listen to mainstream rock, people are afraid to admit listening to them.
It almost seems like you can admit listening to anything but when it comes to the Dead, it's almost whispered in hushed tones.
If you like them, now is the time to come out of your hole and cop to it.
Any takers?
((and, yes, I know I'm going to be eaten alive but it was worth it))

Liked a couple studio albums, also have a couple Bear's Picks. That's about it. Hate the whole live show noodling/jamming thing they do. Tape trading boggles my mind.

Rice, Rice, Hillman and Pederson do a great cover.

Okay, I admit it: I love them too.
I will stand with you, Mike.
Who else do you love?
Regards,
BiR -
Y'all can keep them. You won't get any competition from me.
-
When did they last cut an album?
-
Not a big Phish fan, although I do like Jimmy Buffett's cover of "Gumbo".
I also like NRBQ, Richard Betts and Great Southern, and I like Widespread Panic a lot.
How about you?
Now Playing: Fletcher Henderson – “Slumming on Park Avenue” -
There are also albums that are released and then, for whatever reason, are released with bonus tracks, missing tracks, outtakes, etc.
There are also about a billion live albums, including the "official" bootlegs, the "Dick's Picks" series. Of these, #11 is my favorite.
As near as I can tell, the last album was "Infrared Roses", which is not a studio album, but a compilation of live material.
I would strongly encourage all but the most fanatical fans to skip it. It's really not very good.
Mostly, it's just Mickey Hart banging on a drum for an hour and a half.
I think the last honest to goodness, orginal studio album was "Built to Last", which also wasn't very good.
Sad to say, they didn't exactly end on a high note (no pun intended).
You're better off to just stick with the classics and go from there.
Now Playing: Kate Taylor – Sister Kate -
This is still the "Music Ministry Forum"? Isn't it? How do the Greatful Dead relate to ministry?? Just curious....someone please tell me.

If they're dead then why are they so greatful?
-
Are there any contemporary Christian singers worth talking about?
-
If you really "love" that kind of stuff, it tells a lot about you!
-
We could talk about Steve Camp. He's pretty cool.

As a christian...who loves Iona, Edens Bridge, Phil Keaggy, Big Tent Revival, Praise and Worship music ala Vineyard Winds of Worship...I very much enjoy the Grateful Deads music. What I'm talking about is the instrumental aspect of their music.
I have none of the studio recordings, but several of their live recordings. The extended instrumental jamming is the thing they are so good at, and what I enjoy. The Allman Brothers Band are among my favorites as well. Also in the jazz field people like John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Yes a lot of these people are lost, sometimes druggies, old hippies, etc. But theres nothing wrong with appreciating the instrumental aspect of their music. Ideally, I would love for all these people to get BORN AGAIN and do exactly what they do now...but with lyrics praising God or speaking about the things of God.
Thats one of the things that bugs me about so much of christian music...you get the impression that they think an extended guitar or sax solo will cause them to lose their salvation or something.
JAM brothers and sisters JAM!!!
God will get a big smile on His face during that 5 minute guitar solo...if your playing it for Him! :D I spent 4 years playing lead electric guitar with our praise and worship band at church and we took extended solos a lot...God loved every one! I am currently in my 3rd year with a regional gospel bluegrass band and we take tons of solos.
But getting back to bands like the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band...since they arent singing about God. I just ignore the lyrics most of the time. Its easy to do with the Grateful Dead because most of the time their lyrics dont make an ounce of sense anyway. :D
Some of the others where the lyrics do make sense?
In one ear....right out the other.
(maybe thats why God gave us two ears instead of just one!)
God bless,
Mike -
Shiloh,
Mike didnt say anything about approving of their lifestyles, agreeing with the subject matter of the songs, wanting to live like them, or anything else. He just said he enjoyed the music.
And for all you know he may...like I do...have shelves full of good Praise and Worship music or CCM by people like Phil Keaggy or Iona as I do.
Its simply not that big of a deal to enjoy the sound of some secular music...while having the discernment to not be effected negatively by the problematic subject matter of some of the songs.
Grace and Peace,
Mike -
I don't approve of some of the things they do/did. I just like their music and I find Jerry Garcia to be a fascinating character in American musical history.
Doyle Lawson (who Jerry played with, every now and then), Carl Story, Paul William, etc.
Now Playing: Stan Kenton – “Sketches on Standards”
