I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of our cable tv

I didn't have cable until this year when I moved into a basement apt. and a cable TV is part of the rent.
So I know I can live without cable since I went without it for years and years.
I also went without looking at TV for most of my life, except a few programs here and there, until the 90s. And I never watched that much.
I do watch stuff now when I want to take a break. I live alone and that's why I think I watch it more. When I was married, I did not watch TV as much. Also, when raising my son as a single mom, I watched less.
My son was raised with very little TV and does not even own a TV (he's 27).
Peter, my one son-in-law is American. He has to watch Brit shows with my daughter. Often she is laughing her head off and he sits there with a stare....He has a hard time understanding what they are saying.
Are you ok with the language thing? Especially the East London comedies?

Jim, I don't get a lot of British humor. I have laughed at Mr. Bean, though (is that British? If it's not, I'll be quite embarassed).
We don't have cable----can't get it out in the sticks. We could get a dish, but can't/don't want to afford it. I enjoy watching tv at night, but we could never find something wholesome when we had cable in the city. Instead we watch DVDs of old sitcoms and such. I LOVE an old movie with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

Back in the 50s or 60s there was only ABC, NBC, CBS or PBS. In some rural areas, maybe only one station. The prime time shows were fairly decent that the family would watch.
I would not give you a dime for any of the programs now on in prime time of the three major networks. If it were not for the History, Discovery, Learning, TV Land, and maybe some of the news and weather channels, I wouldn't have it. I have very little time to watch anyhow.
A positive thing about cable is since I work a midnight shift, putting the TV on C-Span puts me to sleep during the day.
It seems that back in our day of TV, there were lots of westerns or variety shows (ie Ed Sullivan, et al). Now it is reality shows. These and the crude comedy and drama shows are not for me. We are always talking about the evil of porn, as we well should. But really, what is the difference besides the degree to what is shown between the modern day shows and porn. What is it doing to our children's mind?

We got rid of ours years ago, and it is unbelievable how God has worked in our home and lives. We felt convicted, even though we didn't watch anything above a PG rating, so we went ahead and stopped the cable. Part of it was we wondered how many people were going to hell while we wasted time watching a sitcom or ballgame. After that, it seemed much easier to obey God in other little areas. Shortly after this, my dh felt the call to preach, became ordained, and began pastoring. Since then, we've witnessed the salvation of a number of people! Our lives are much too busy for tv now. What little we do watch comes from netflix, mostly the familty oriented movies or old shows like the Beverly Hillbillies.
If God is convicting you about it, what are you waiting for? It's not a sin to have cable, but maybe God is trying to draw you closer to him in convicting you to get rid of it. Go ahead, obey. I wonder how much He will use you in the future because of this small step?
By the way, be prepared. He might start convicting you about how much time you spend on the computer once you get rid of the cable.:smilewinkgrin:

I have not had cable for 6 years. My wife and I agreed to maintain the status of "no cable" after we got married in 2005. I know it helps me watch MUCH less TV.
I just got a digital converter box so that I can get the new digital signal with my rabbit ears. Ironically, I am considering a local channels only version of cable because the digital signal seems to be very tempermental and makes watching any station an aggravation.
Was at friends watching a football game yesterday. Enjoyed the game but I was bothered by the content of the commercials that my young son was seeing. He has not been exposed to gun violence and scary movie trailers before. Not having cable and having a quick finger on the remote during commercials is a good thing.

Not all conviction comes from God, though. Outside influences, legalism, "church" convictions, etc. play a role in why we do things as well. I grew up in a KJVO home, and had the "conviction" if I did not own a KJV or read from it, my relationship with God was off. That's why I stated to ask God, as we tend to listen to man way too much.Allan said:

I do struggle with the language a bit. On BBC-A, they still bleep out much of the language. I know it is a different culture "across the pond" (and spiritually dark to say the least), so I probably do not as offended as some when others use "bad language" (unless they claim to be Christ-Followers).
I will however, walk away/change the channel if there is an excess of using the Lord's name in an inappropriate way.
