Oversimplified, to the point of not being true. There were the Revenue Acts of 1861 and 1862, both of which imposed an income tax (specifically aimed at funding the war). There were also state income taxes which helped to pay for things like schools, colleges, roads, etc.
I certainly believe we are being over taxed, but that doesn't mean we should make false statements about it. -
and the point being is that the Fed should NOT be taxing/spending money for projects of which is a State/Commonwealth responsibility.

some examples would be Food stamps, highway projects, education - for starters
What is eaiser is to look at the constitution and see what it allows the Feds to spend money on:
Post office, military, ect
