Okay. With Vista on my system and my heart's desire to get it off, do I just plop my Win 7 CDROM in and go? What should I look for in the installation process?

Who knows if everyone has the same offerings  but you probably will get the option of a clean install which wipes your drive, or just an upgrade which leaves your files/programs alone and they should work when it is done. You should back up your important files just to be sure.
It may differ if you have a full version or an upgrade disk. I had the upgrade disk.
I did the upgrade path and except for my printer drivers not working, everything on my system was working when it finished. It did leave me with a report that four of my programs would probably not work but they were utility type programs form a flaky company.
Be forwarned the upgrade took 2-3 hours due to my having a ton of junk.
If you use office you might read the thread about it. If you have office and are going to upgrade to 2007 you might want to opt for the wiped disk method.
All in all it was very painless this time for me - as I've said before I am afraid that Microsoft has made a real mistake and done something right for a change. -

I had to do a clean install to go from Vista home premium to 7 professional. Microsoft.com has some info on what you have to do, and a tool that will check for program compatibility.
I backed up My Documents, and then just put the install CD in.
I love my 7! I found that some of my older programs that won't run on Vista will run on 7. -

Same here, I even got one of my Myst programs to install and run  -
If it is an upgrade then, yes, you just pop it in.
If it is a full install, I would use something besides the Win7 disk to format the drive first. I would recommend -

Insert obligatory "you should switch to Linux or Mac because Microsoft is awful" post here.
Just saving all you Linux and Mac fanboys the trouble. :wavey: -
