I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving. To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it, -- but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor. [John Galsworth, “Errantry” stanza 1, The Collected Poems of John Galsworthy, p.1, 1934]

Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.

A comfortable old age is the reward of a well-spent youth. Instead of its bringing sad and melancholy prospects of decay, it would give us hopes of eternal youth in a better world.

Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can't, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?

Quite a bit. Orphans and the homeless are not dead and have minds just like everyone else. :)

As with all proverbs, the context of the originator must be taken into account, simply because there are many conflicting (or seemingly so) proverbs that are equally "accepted"!

    A couple of examples:

Absence makes the heart grow fonder
    vs
Out of sight, out of mind

    OR

    He who hesitates is lost
    vs
    Haste makes waste

One generally quotes the specific one that suits his purpose at the time.

Sorta like those that pick & choose isolated Scripture verses with no regard for the context and/or the over-all teaching of Scripture.

Somthing like "Penny wise and pound foolish." Or, "Look after your pennies and your pounds will look after themselves."
