Throughout the history of Gods chosen people Israel, it was Gods will for them not to have a king. The people pushed the issue of having a king and got Saul.
If God is not in favour of Kings, why do we call the Bible after a King?
Is God o.k with the term "King James"?

God ordains kings like any other ruler.
-
I hope that's what He will call me on that day.
-
This has got to be one of the more silly questions about the KJV that I have ever seen.
IMO;
Some folks are so determined to sling mud that they get most of it on themselves.
KING David = a man after God's own heart.
KING Solomon = none wiser among men
KING Josiah = removed all idolatry out of the land
KING Jesus = KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
Seems like God isn't as unfavorable towards Kings as someone would like to declare.
ReĀ 1:6
And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

The problem with all of this, is that the King of Christians is God.
As Christians we are grafted into the vine, It was not Gods will for there to be a King in Israel, and it only came about because of rebellion and people turing away from the Lord.
So why honour an earthly king by naming a Bible after him when Christ is our only King? -
Sorry Ben, this is a non-runner.
It's just a name - if you prefer call it the Authorised Version. Other languages also have versions reffered to by the monarchs or authorised them. -
Just to back up C4K here.
My country has a 17th century one authorised by a republic and a recent one authorised by a monarch. -
It doesn't matter what HUMAN authorizes any BV...it matters that GOD does. After all, it's HIS word.
Notice that the geneva Bible, KJV, and NIV all seem to carry God's authorization due to their popularity.
The name is just a means to distinguish one BV from another, nothing more. KJ did NOT name the AV after himself; I believe some Anglican officials first used the handles "KJV" or "KJB", & I doubt if that name was politically correct in Cromwell's time. -
It would be interesting to learn where and when and why the Bible was first designated the KJV.
Anybody know where I can begin looking for such an historical reference?

IN AWE OF THY WORD (A.V.Publications, 2003)
by G.A.Riplinger -- nah, don't. The 1200
page book has no indicies. She used a modern
computer program to make it so that when
she wanted a red letter in the book, she
typed in the code that made a read letter.
The same computer program she used to make
the red letters and the large letters could
have been used to make an index or two.
Why didn't she have some indexes? An index
of partial verses quoted would really be
good for we who discuss why verses have
the words that we need. But no such a break
from Sister Riplinger. I would suggest it might
be because she didn't want her book inspected
so closely, just bought??? -
AV 1611 Jim: It would be interesting to learn where and when and why the Bible was first designated the KJV.
"The Bible" has never been designated "The KJV"...Only one version of it has.
If you're driving down "the road", you're driving only upon one small part of the road at any given time. When you breathe "the air", you're only using one tiny fraction of all the air.
Anybody know where I can begin looking for such an historical reference?
I tried before, and all I could find was among Anglican officials, some of them called the AV "King James'(possessive) Version(or Bible) during his lifetime hoping to gain favor & stay on his "good side". I cannot find when the term came into general use.
I don't believe the first authorized version, the Great Bible of 1539, named for its physical size, was ever called the "authorized version". -

Thanks for your non answer and your insertion of a totally irrelevant tidbit about Riplinger. That was very helpful....NOT!
Roby,
Thanks. I had thought that perhaps a good Bible history resource might have something about it, but evidently you could not find it. I will trust your efforts since you have a bigger ax to grind than I do. ;)

I don't call my Bible the KJ Bible. We use the terms God's Word, the Bible and Holy Bible.
I don't think God worries about the small stuff we 'fret' over. Satan puts many of the little stuff (little foxes) in our lives to spoil the big stuff.
Song of Solomon 2:15 Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
The little foxes gnaw away at the lower limbs which then weaken, break and the fruit dies. -

Let me try again:

Yes, it would be intersting "to learn where
and when and why the Bible was first designated the"
King James Version (KJV). As best i recall,
I read the answer to your question somewhere
in the 1200 pages of:
IN AWE OF THY WORD (A.V.Publications, 2003)
by G.A.Riplinger
Unfortunately, she didn't bother to have her book
indexed so one can find anything. Well, i've already
spent more time in her book than it was worth.
So i won't be looking up the answer for you. But
if you intently study this book i cited, you will
find the answer to your question. Caveat: I'm over
60-years-old and occasionally have a senior moment :(
so i MIGHT have forgotten which book i read it in
and i know for sure i forgot what the answer was. -
Thanks for your clarification Ed.
But I will NOT be looking to Riplinger for anything of historical significance.
Thanks, but no thanks. I did ask where I could begin looking. I think I'll try the web...

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but following the title page is a page dedicating it to King James.

Here is the text of the dedication.

That would work. It will be time consuming though.
Maybe on the week-end? -

A KJV bible that has the words "King James Version" on the cover in place of "Holy Bible"?
A KJV bible that has the words "King James Version" somewhere on the cover or spine?
The earliest written reference to the translation as the King James Version?
