The phrase "if souls exist they must have mass" is not a given nor is it prove.

Obviously you have not heard of the doctor who performed precise weight measurements as people died and he found there was a slight decrease in weight when a person dies and the soul leaves the body.

I heard of his experiments decades ago. -

Shows you ignorance and laziness in not reading the links. So an unaccountable physical drop in weight is no proof. Then I guess there is no proof that a 400 pound person is overweight.
Do I note a lack of faith Rev.?
So, answer the OP Rev, is hell endothermic or exothermic? -

To quote one famous person "What difference does it make ---??"Sneaky

This is an interesting question. I think I'd vote for endothermic and would suggest that the basic nature of the soul is joy or bliss. So then to move the soul to the Hell "location", it would absorb the harshly negative energies of it's surrounding environment, causing suffering to all parts of the being.
Note, I'm not a physicist nor do I fully understand the dynamics involved in this intricate situation. What is your perspective Crabtownboy? -

Here is the answer by the stuent who received an A:
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
"First, We postulate that if souls exist, then they must have some mass. If they do, then a mole of souls can also have a mass. So, at what rate are souls moving into hell and at what rate are souls leaving? I think we can safely assume that once a soul gets to hell, it will not leave.
Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for souls entering hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, then you will go to hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and souls go to hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change in volume in hell. Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in hell to stay the same, the ratio of the mass of souls and volume needs to stay constant. Two options exist:
- If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.
- If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.
The student, Tim Graham, got the only A.

Oh that's a really interesting way of considering things. I enjoyed the humor included in his arguments:
- If hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter hell, then the temperature and pressure in hell will increase until all hell breaks loose.
- If hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until hell freezes over.
Consider that there may be different levels and degrees of hell. For example, stage 1- someone who constantly steals food to survive. Or stage 9- a serial killer who tortures and kills many people for sadistic pleasure. Therefore, the different levels would either expand or contract at different intensities and/or speeds. Perhaps someone at level 9 would never leave, while level 1 has opportunities of some kind, unknown to us, to make changes. Perhaps those at level 1 are granted some kind of grace.
There are also always exceptions to rules, in almost all areas of life. Unfortunately, I do not know enough about physics or chemistry to give any satisfactory examples. It is interesting though, to consider the scientific aspect of things and enjoy learning and reading about this :). -

Yes, he was very clever. To come up with an answer such as this quickly shows intelligence, quick thinking, knowledge of the subject matter. He deserves an A.

Ok that's good. I'm not such a huge fan of arguing :). I haven't read Inferno, it just made more sense to have differing degree's of severity. I look forward to your next topic!

Ah well actually I got the information from a spiritual website, SSRF. It describes that the spiritual body becomes heavy with accumulated sins and the more "weight" it accumulates, the lower level of hell it goes to. (Back to the physics again :). Sounds similar to what Dante is talking about.
Popes... yeah that can a heated topic but perhaps Dante knew more about what was going on behind closed doors than the average person did/does. On this planet it seems that the greater the authority a person has, the greater the abuses that are committed. -
