Do we as Baptists believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father?
Is Jesus the only way?

But, you have some hard-hearted Baptists who want to qualify that with a certain type of living. Do this....don't do that. And they can be so rigid about it that they actually end up believing that "real" Baptists should practice the legalistic lifestyle that they do or one's salvation is in actually in question.
And then there are the Baptists who are happy tip-toeing through the tulips of life. They believe that Jesus is the only way, but that's as far as they get.....just a simple agreement with you and they never darken the doors of the church nor do they want to live in obedience of the words of the same Jesus that they claim to know.
So, yes, while we as Baptists believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father, not all people who are Baptists are christians and not all christians are Baptists. -
Yes.
Scarlett, you never fail to impress me. -

And He is God.
And the Holy Spirit writing through Paul said: Let God be true, and every man a liar.
Somebody tell you there's another way, EG ? -

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
Not only that, but in Acts 4.12 we read of Peter and John saying:
"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
Now if Jesus was lying when He said that He is the only way to the Father, that would leave us with a sinful saviour - one who had sins of his own to be atoned for - and we need a sinless Saviour; anything less would be useless. Writing to Christian believers at Corinth in 2 Corinthians 5.21, Paul said:
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
So getting back to the question, there could well be some people in this world who call themselves Baptists but at the same time don't believe that Jesus is the only way to the Father, though I personally have not met any. If I did, I think I would ask them what they thought being a Baptist, and being a Christian, actually means.
Every blessing. -
GREAT posts! Keep 'em coming!

Let me extend Scarlett's insightful post a little. There are also Baptists who will parrot "Jesus is the way", but who will then hedge that either by saying, "But Jesus could have come to other peoples in another form" or by arguing, "I have Jewish (or Muslim or Buddhist or whatever) friends who are sincere and who are just as loving, if not more so, than many Christians". I know we have such folks, because I had some in the church I pastored!
I liked to point out that "Jesus in another form" is akin to Mormonism or to Hinduism, but it is not the perspective of the Bible. What one theologian called "the scandal of particularity" may seem unfair to us, but it is grace that God does anything at all to reach out and save us. Usually I would point out to such folks that there is such a thing as general revelation, discussed in Romans 1 and Hebrews 1, but NOW ... you know the rest of the quote.
As for the "sincerity" argument, I liked to point out that Hitler too was sincere, as were the Ku Klux Klan leaders, etc., ad inf. It is quite easy to be sincerely wrong. And quite easy, really, to be loving and "nice" on the surface, but to have all sorts of sin issues underneath. It did not usually take long for people to acknowledge that even Christians struggle with unconfessed sin down beneath their sweet facades! -
Yes!
I corresponded a while with a gal in Washington State who said that she believed that too, but after a while, I found out that she really thought that anyone who lived a Christian lifestyle would still go to heaven even though they didn't know Jesus personally.
It's not really an on the surface question.
And as Scarlett pointed out, we have those that say Yes but then there is a laundry list to be checked off. -
As Tony the tiger would say, "Grrrrrrrrrrreeat! Posts!"

In a word, YUP!

Put me down as a YUP too!
just someone who follows Ed around. :) -
How would this apply to the ME crowd? Jesus is the only way to the Father...in eternal salvation... but it is up to me for Kingdom salvation
