I wonder is the church that good at meeting needs of its people? I have a need and all people do is pray for it but I have seen no action. People are not dependable. Perhaps people can't help or perhaps they choose not to because of greed. Perhaps we need more with the gift of helps.

David Platt wrote a book called Radical but I bet much of it has been forgotten so many years later. What say you?

My church is excellent with teaching doctrine but worthless when it comes to meeting felt needs in my experience.

Our Church is one of the better ones that we have been a part at becoming involved in meeting the legitimate physical needs of both its attendees (note that I did not write members) and those outside the Church.

Kind of reminds me of a pastor I know. He preached on love for over a year and a half. The chairman of deacons told him "a lot of us are getting tire of hearing the same subject every sermon. When are you going to preach in something else?" The pastor told him "when you get this, and I start seeing evidence if it in the church, I will move to something else.

I wonder is the church and then you say my church... Is the church a they or is the church me?... I heard a story a long time ago of two minister in our fellowship meeting... 1st Minister... So Brother how is your church?... 2nd Minister... It's out of order!!!... 1st Minister... (surprised by that answer) Really?... What's wrong with it?... 2nd Minister... I'M IN IT!... Churches have problems and we know and each one on the BB has seen their share but are you part of the problem or part of the solution?... Like my Dad use to say worry about your own backyard and let the other fella worry about his... Then there is this admonition from scripture... Brother Glen:)

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

5:15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

A church is not in business to meet the "felt" needs of people. It is there to bring the gospel to people and to grow mature believers.

What are the "needs" you have? Why is it the church's job to meet these needs?

I think we need to remember that we are the church and ask ourselves what we are doing to meet the needs of other members. I suspect that will be the answer to your question.

I think someone is going to be looking for a new church within the next year or so.

I see nothing in Scripture about looking to the church to meet one's needs. There's a whole lot about God supplying every need. And why are you complaining to the public about it? If God isn't hearing you, what do you think we are going to do?

And who are you to lay anything to the charge of God's elect?

The church is to help take care of widows.

We are also to love one another as ourselves, to love them as Christ loves us. I think this implies (more than implies) we care for one another and meet the physical needs of one another insofar as is reasonable. The issue may be in asking what constitutes such a need.

Felt needs are not necessarily the same as Legitimate needs. There are many things people today think are necessities that are luxuries. Computers, cell phones, "newer" cars (in some cases) come to my mind as good examples.

Living in the United States really skews our sense of need.
People need shelter but that doesn't mean the biggest house you can find.
People need food but that does mean the most expensive meals you can make.
People need clothing but that doesnt mean the most expensive designer threads and enough to fill multiple closets.

My travels have taught me that if you have a roof over your head food on the table and multiple outfits that you are rich.

The idea of "felt needs" is right out of the seeker sensitive model. Find out what people think they need and give that to them. If they think they need entertainment on Sundays that's what you give them. If they feel like new songs that what you give them. If they feel they need positive affirmation that's what you give them.

The needs it met in the book of Acts. The particular one I have in mind here is financial. Financial seemed to be the context of the scripture in James I quoted.

Everything seems to be the fault of the seeker sensitive church. I am going to have to blame my sons ball game getting rained out on the seeker sensitive church.
