By any measure or standard you wish to answer, do you believe the U.S. is a Christian nation? There's no middle, there's no maybe, there's no "used to be", there's no "I wish it was", there's no "that's what the Supreme Court (or George Washington, or fill in the blank) said", there's no "Jay's Treaty said no", there's no "The First Amendment prohibits it". Is the U.S. in any sense a Christian nation in your opinion?
Of course, please feel free to expound on why you wish it was, or think it is, or hope not, or whatever.

I voted NO, not because I don't want it to be...or that I don't think it was founded with that intention; but your poll didn't give me any other option. :(
As much as I want it to be a Christian nation, one cannot look around you and honestly believe that it is...even though the founders of this nation intended it to be so!
Repent! -
I voted no too. We aren't even pretending anymore :(
-
I voted no also. Very rarely do you ever see Christians living for God, abiding in his will. A majority of the people are becoming atheist or wiccan. it's sad. There's this song, that Tri-State Baptist College sings. And, it's about America and how it WAS a Christian nation, but it's going downhill. -sigh- It's sad.
-
I voted yes since the majority of the population is at least nominally Christian and we do a huge amount to help the less fortunate in the world, even enemies of our country.
-
No such thing because in NT times God "saves" individuals, not nations.
-
I voted no. You can just look and see that our Nation is somewhat divided and FTR is right there is no middle ground here. I don't know what course our Nation will take in the future but it is just like that story about the man who was throwing the starfishes back into the sea after a terrible storm, he couldn't save them all but he could save the ones that he could reach.
-
Absolutely, positively, definitely no.
"Christian" nations, if there were such a thing, don't allow the whole scale murder of innocent children and protect such action by law. -

I voted no. The founders didn't want the US to be a Chrisian nation because that is what they left in Europe, Christian nations that limited their religious freedoms. If the US ever becomes a Christian nation, that is what it will be, a nation that limits the religious freedoms of others. So I hope it never becomes a Christian nation.
I hope and pray that it will be a nation of Christians. -

I voted yes but after I die I am not so sure....
(Please don't e-mail me--FTR started this and I am just joking around but I did vote yes.) -
Very well said Gold Dragon, Very well said. -
We are a nation of primarily Christian people many who are backslid or Christian in name only.We were founded on Christian principles by Christian people seeking freedom to worship as they pleased without the government controlling worship or the church.
How did our nation ever get to such a terrible place in regards to our values? The answer is simple,"good men did and do nothing".We tolerate to much evil. The favorite TV shows for people to watch in this country involve all kinds of crimes, criminals, and deviant behavior.People think nothing of stealing from thier employers or telling little white lies.Abortion is the law of the land.Adam and Steve now want to get married,in addition they want legislation passed that will punish those who speak out against thier behavior passed as a hate crime. There is a terrible breakdown of the family with over 30% of the children being born in this country today are to unwed mothers. Not to mention all of the dope in the streets in almost any community in this country and these little gang bangers who give life no value.Values clarification has been taught in our public schools for over 40 years, which basically says you can do the crime if you can do the time.
Who do we have to thank for this abundance of open sin and decadence in our society, the ACLU,NEA,Supreme Court, and most of all Good Men who do nothing. -
(Edited: Excellent post, POB! You were apparently typing yours as I was typing mine)
OK, my own answer is "yes", that we were founded as a Christian nation, built on Christian values, a Christian view of man's sinful nature and understanding that he can barely govern himself and can be given only minimal power, with maximum safeguards, over others. We were founded by a predominant and virtually homogenous Christian population, those values percolated into the society of men they formed. The political underpinnings of that society were shaped by a largely Christian rejection of the divine right of kings. In none of the philosophical influences on our early history was a rejection of God taught, as happened with France. In fact, our Founders had a deep understanding that a Providential God had brought them through their battle for independence, that a holy and judgemental God watched them. Because Christianity, whether Protestant or Catholic, so permeated its populace, the numerous appeals to God, spoken by its leaders and written into its charters, were deeply understood as reference to the Christian God they worshipped. Yes, we have increasingly rejected Him as a populace, but because Christian values are so deeply ingrained, our population at least understandst the various elitist influences as a rejection of God. Unfortunately, we also seem to care less and less. -
I voted yes and I agree with FTR. That is not to say that our government is Christian or is obligated to promote Christianity. It is simply to say that A child who has his father's blood does not stop being his father's child if he goes bad and murder's etc. We were concieved in God's mind and nothing will ever change that.
Now FTR, we need a poll asking if we were EVER a christian nation? I'd do it but I've never done one.

Well put! -

You ought to do one. It's the only way to learn how. I still mess 'em up, but I'm slowly learning to think out my choices beforehand, to write them down first, and to make the choices clear. I think it also helps to explain in your OP the reasoning behind the choices you've given, which might help avoid the "Well, it doesn't address ___ or ___." I think it helped in this case because there are so many valid objections to such a black or white choice as I've offered here.
You'll do well. -
The origional Plymouth Colony could be said to be a "Christian" nation, I suppose, but they couldn't last 20 years as such.

"We need more who are willing to do that today rather than lukewarm so-called christians whose most important objective is putting the Ten Commandments on the courtyard lawn."--------------------------------------------------------------
This is certainly true, but what is wrong with Christians standing up to judicial activisim and antichristian prejudice.
