I was just watching "Leave it to Beaver" on TV Land. June asked Ward to mail a letter from the office because she did not have any - get this - air mail stamps!
Just curious, what would the younger generation think that meant:confused:
Is this a "Generation gap"

Must be a cultural gap as well ;).
Are there no more airmail stamps over there?
We still use them here for international post. -
Do you remember those mail boxes that were on like 20 ft poles? And marked "air mail"?

Correct me if I'm wrong-------which seldom is------but(and its a big one)
There's no such thing as an air mail stamp
You go to the Post Office----you tell them you want to mail a letter from here to----------say--------the UK-----to Roger over there in Ireland
The little lady clerk will weigh the envelope with the letter in it-----will put on the appropriate postage------and then will stamp the envelope to read "Air Mail" with a hand held rubber stamp -
I am pretty sure that there were actual air mail stamps back in the 1960's, when I was just a small child. He heh.
My oldest son was watching Fonzi and Ritchie one day and, having seen some pictures of me as a kid, asked me "Daddy? Where you born in the Happy Days?"
Well, that made me think of how much our society has changed since i was born.
I am sure that 1959 was the "Happy Days" for many, but I wonder if my parents actually thought so after giving birth to me....?????

Okay - its coming bakc to me. Only slightly older than AJ I do remember actual air mail stamps, and the postage here is done the same way BB mentioned. If a letter leaves the island you pay the appropriate postage, the you stick a 'Priority Aerphost' sticker on it.

I do know that at one time there were air mail stamps though. -
I have an envelope in hand which came air mail from the UK..The stamp is the photo of two aircraft on it. This was Feb 10, 1970 and the fee was 9d (9 pence..about 17 cents at the time).
I remember sendiing email to the UK and it cost 2 cents more than regular mail.
As to mail delivery, it often takes two weeks to get a letter from Michigan in Ontario???? We are next door neighbours!
In the early 40's we mailed letters to Canada from the UK for less than two pence and it took between 4 and 5 days.
Generation gap? You bet!
Cheers,

I send mail to canada quicker thn I recieve it, but it usually only takes 3 or 4 days more to recieve then to send.

LOL. I thought the same thing as you when I thought about this thread. Its all by air now so we take it for granted.
This reminds me of the other day when I was at work, and my wife text messaged me and said "Is your phone off?"
Duh???? If my phone was off then I wouldnt have gotten the message!!!!

Yes, there were air mail stamps. I remember them well. I also remember 5¢ stamps!
I sell internationally on eBay and there are 2 ways to mail it now.
Send it priority or express and it goes by air.
Send it parcel post and it goes by boat.
Just kidding. ;o) -
I checked with the postmistress to-day and she said that all mail that leaves Canada goes by air. Regular postage stamps are applied at the correct rate. Air Mail stamps are applied to parcels otherwise the parcel will go by sea........I hope everyone wraps them in water-proof containers!
I wonder how many sink?
Cheers,

If I remember correctly, we didn't buy air mail stamps, we bought air mail envelopes that already had air mail stamped on them. We had to buy them at the post office.
I had forgotten about the thin paper!
