I find it curious that some of the same people who insist on taking Genesis "literally" are the same ones who don't think that Japheth offered her as a burnt offering despite the text saying he did.

Just wanted to interject, these are two totally different issues. Compromised interpretations of Genesis (day-age, gap theory, framework, etc.) have to do with man's attempt reconcile God's Word with man's word (man's views of origins). It's an attempt to harmonize the biblical account with man's ideas.
In the debate on Jepthath's vow, there is an attempt to reconcile Scripture with other Scriptures. Does this vow contradict other Scriptures about human sacrifice? Wherever, you end up, it's an honorable debate, and not the same as the Genesis debate.
