I disagree - 2 years is a lifetime in political life.
Most folks will forget about it.
Unless there are more such incidents - and then the Republicians will be able to claim that new gun laws do not help.

I agree that two years is a very long time in politics.

You may be right. I am not sure. I do believe Sandy Hook was a watershed moment for many people.

Sadly, I expect there will be more. People on both sides can claim the gun laws did not help or can argue it would have been worse without them. I doubt it can be proved either way. It will come down to the perception of the voters. If their perception is the Republicans are wrong it will only marginalize the GOP further to the fringe and will cost them dearly. It will be a hard sell. For the staunch GOP supporter it could well be another case of refusing to believe the reality of the issue. Time and events will tell.

I believe this last incident pushed many people over the edge on this topic. I also believe that the shooting at Columbine is what set the topic firmly in the minds of many and that the shooting in Connecticut brought many people to the point of "enough already".

Frankly I do not know what the correct answer is as there are already so many guns in the hands of so many in the US. I see no need for assault weapons as they are only for killing, not hunting. Hunting rifles, shotguns are a different subject in my view.

Here is a timeline on school killings in the US.

Weren't we saying after the Bobby Kennedy killing that we needed to do pass laws to make owning a gun more difficult and register all of our guns?
Even old cowboy stars like Rex Allen did away with all of his guns. After a while the media found something else to push and it all cool down. Keep in mind the news business is a lot like education, as a news person or as a professor, you are no one until you publish something new and or something that puts down the old.

The last Assault Weapons Ban was passed in 1994. In November of 1994 the Democrats lost the election.

Two years might be a long time for the memory of most Americans but Politicians have memories like elephants! They will remember the formula: Vote for AWB = lose next election.

Politicians are nothing if not pragmatic.

Why do liberals keep insisting that the GOP needs to become more like them in order to win elections? This fails the common sense test. They need to court the conservatives if they want to win back the voters they've lost. We're staying home, we're voting 3rd party, and we're disgusted with the GOP acting like liberals.

Up here in New Jersey.... they have purdy much limited any form of weapon except a shotgun & a baseball bat. Its the criminals who have the handguns and rifles. Iffin you ever can catch some of these politicians (who probably service the criminal more than the citizenry), you let me know. I could show them the proper use of my Grand Slam, Flame Tempered Louisville Slugger.

Violent crime has decreased since the assault weapons ban was lifted. No liberal will acknowledge this. Perhaps C.T.Boy wants wants more children to die.
