So how long before we see weapons grade lasers in our Military? I know that the war in Iraq and Afghanistan have re-invigorated our research and development of military technologies - so how long before we get phasers and photon torpedo's?

I remember them talking about this being just about ready when the war in Iraq was imminent. They were saying that instead of hundreds of thousands of dollars for missiles they could use lasers that produce the same amount of damage for just hundreds of dollars per shot, and with greater accuracy and speed - lowering 'collateral damage'.

Lasers work much better above the atmosphere, where they won't scatter so much. A huge energy output is required.
And, the whole system can be defeated by putting a highly reflective coating on the missile. -
Galation is correct. However, the development of laser technology has led to advances in particle weapons technology. Particle weapons are, imo, at least 50 years away from being technologically commonplace.

I believe Israel deployed a fixed version of the system a year or two ago to protect their northern border from short range missles. -
We already have an airborn laser system that works well.

Great, we no longer have to panic the next time an asteroid comes flying toward earth. ;)
