How long were you a black man living in the south in the 1960s?

Are you seriously suggesting that the American Colonies had no culture of their own

What the heck has that got to do with the question? A question which I note you won't answer

More than happy to. It's only a side point to start with and not worth dying in a ditch over

Read your own post #120. "It's not particularly nice to attack anyone's family but that doesn't hold people back here."

"Here." You do know what that means, don't you? "Here." "Here" in this thread. "Here" on the Baptist Board.

It worked out just fine. African Americans now own those businesses.

You are aware, are you not, that the United States did not become an independent country until the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776? There was noting to assimilate to!

What's your evidence? Even if accurate, that would not have happened had the government now outlawed discrimination in the way you decry. And it's scant comfort to those blacks who died before Jim Crow was outlawed

So, no Colonial governments, no Colonial culture?

Uh, I look around. I live here, remember? I see African American owned businesses every day. In fact I patronize them every day.

The government had nothing to do with the cultural evolution of the US. It was the people.

How many African Americans do you know who died trying to buy or sell their goods or services?

Colonial government was English. Colonial culture was English.

Excellent point. Politics is downstream of culture. A point that many conservatives and liberals need to learn.

I have to admit I am troubled by your (Matt's - Ken posted between Matt's post and my reply) insistence that African Americans lacked the ability and will to achieve great progress on their own but insist that they had to sit in the lap of the government (made up of old white men, remember) in order to achieve anything.

Why is it that liberals always want to take credit for the efforts and sacrifices of others?

Removing government sponsored discrimination is not sitting in the lap of government. It is the removal of government imposed restraints.

That is true. The Democrats in the south threw up every roadblock imaginable against the civil rights movement. But ultimately it was the people themselves who brought about the change. "We Shall Overcome" was not only a theme, but a promise.

A Gallup poll in October 1964 reported that the public approved of the Civil Rights Act by nearly two-to-one (58 percent to 31 percent). And in April 1965, Gallup found a whopping 76 percent in favor of a then-proposed equal rights voting law.

Like how Matt asserted we should deport the Amish. And when he said we should be happy with stores refusing service to remarried divorcees. And when he wondered what the Apostle James would have made of such shenanigans by the rich and powerful.

    That kind of deflection?

Nope. You just painted yourself into a corner and have no way out except to admit defeat.

No, it is clearly the other way around. In order for him to do as you ask he would have to believe that a Christian should treat a person as a second-class citizen based on skin color. As nobody in this thread has advocated doing any such thing your question was clearly a diversion which you so eloquently accused others of doing in your earlier post.

Unless, of course, you can show us a post in this thread advocating the use of the Bible to justify a Christian treating a person as a second-class citizen based on skin color. Can you?
